Do we need a car? We are staying at the Marriott VC

We will be in Aruba in March but only for 5 nights. Does it make sense to get a car? We are staying at the Marriott timeshares and will want to get some groceries for our room (at least breakfast stuff and snacks). Is transportation good enough to get you around to shops etc. Is there anything "MUST SEE" in other areas of the island where we'll want to have a car? We are traveling with our 12 year old son.

Whether or not to rent a car is a personal decision. Do you HAVE TO have "wheels" to be able to take off in a moment's notice? Will you be eating dinner "in" your unit or venturing off property for dinners? If you dine off property, will you travel further than Palm Beach?

Taxis on the island are plentiful and the public bus system is excellent. For groceries you can take a taxi or public bus to the grocery store and taxi back to your resort. There are shopping malls within walking distance of your resort and downtown Oranjestad is an easy bus ride away.

There are numerous tour operators offering half and full day tours of the island. This will cover all of the highlights of what the island has to offer.

Take an island tour. DePalm Tours and ABC Jeep Tours are good options. You don't NEED a car. Most of the better dining choices, not located in Palm Beach area, may be reached by taxi at a reasonable cost. I suggest that you start a new thread about dining in aruba.

We stay at the Marriott VC for 10 days every year. We find that after figuring the cost of airport taxi and the convenience of having a car is worth it. We are able to go to the grocery stores, stock up on breakfast, lunch items, snacks, drinks, beer, alcohol, etc. There are a few restaurants within walking distance, but many of the restaurants are a drive. There are a few places you might venture out to sightsee in a car, but there are tours as well. (Not a whole lot of sights...but a whole lot of beautiful sunny days and beautiful beach!).

If you plan on a car, reserve ASAP--they run out.

Have a great time.

Thanks for the insights! I think we're going to opt to do a day rental from Hertz or National @ the resort. Will want to do a little shopping but don't want to just park it and pay for it. Since we aren't there for a week it really isn't cheaper to keep for longer.

Our feeling is having a car, just adds to the trip. It is our we to vacation. You spend $$$ to get to the Marriott and back. Then you will leave the resort for dinners.

We like the freedom of the car, it's us.

Enjoy Aruba. Lots of a Taxis are available. You can walk the beach
