Ling and Sons vs Kong Hing deli/produce?

I have read thru reviews of both stores and seem very similar. We are staying at hotel and will have rental car and mainly want to pick up good sandwich fixin's for lunches, fruit for breakfast. I know we could go to both stores, but don't want to waste too much of my precious vacation time wandering around 2 or 3 grocery stores. Does anyone know what brands/types of deli meats they carry? I prefer to spend more for more natural/less processed meats. Also looking for freshest produce. (Assume both stores have good selection of beer/wine/liquor/wine coolers??)

There will be lots of opinions on this one....

As first-timers to Aruba, we did the majority of shopping at Ling & Sons, and enjoyed the variety. Bought quite a few things at Superfood also; not so much at Kong Hing. Can certainly recommend the produce at any of the three. Ling's has a well-organized liquor/beer stash as well, but was also impressed with Superfood. Ling's prices seemed higher than the others, but not in any extreme way (to us).

Ling's is like your local IGA and is clean and bright with familiar foods..."King Kong" and Superfoods have more Dutch/Aruban/South American foods and, IMO, are a tad less expensive because they cater less to the tourist trade. Because it is an arid island, you will find that almost all produce is imported, so expect there to be fewer choices depending on the day you shop. I have heard Tuesday is the best, but we always go Monday and seem to find whatever we need. Meat processing is also different than in the US, but we have always found the meats to be yummie! And don't forget the stoopwaffles!

Ling's is easier to navigate. It's easier to park in their lot, easier to shop there because it is not sooooo big and very Americanized so you will have no trouble finding what you want. Fresh produce, bread, deli, wine and beer located near the entrance and they take a credit card. King Kong is much larger and in a more congested area.

We prefer Kong Hing or Superfoods over Ling's. Prices are better and they have more interesting Dutch foods. Ling's is too Americanized for us - when we travel outside the U.S. we like to leave the U.S. behind and try new things.

Does anyone know the hours of the major supermarkets on Fri Dec 31st and if any are open on Jan 1st (2011)?

We arrive at 3 pm on the 31st and need to know if we will be able to shop that day.

Thanks!

Most stores will close by 3pm on the 31st.

January 1st & 2nd - Ling & Sons will be closed. Not sure about the others but they usually follow suit.

Have been in all of them and prefer Kong Hing , isles clearly marked, room to roam, good selections from USA and world wide. Not much price differences among these fine stores. Ling's gives change only in local currency, not a problem as money is money.

And here's a vote for Superfoods. For our family, it was the best of all worlds--most of the stuff we thought was indispensable in the US could be found as well as wonderful stuff from South America and Europe. And get the mini bags of stroopwafels. And a Superfood shopping bag, which will impress the dickens out of your grocery-wranglers at home. And a Superfoods T-shirt, which will embarrass the dickens out of your teenage children, if you have any.

Here's' a vote for none- try Kung Fui in Palm Beach.

Lings- great for hard to find items- Really expensive

Super Foods- Great for cheese and baked goods- less expensive tyhan Lings

Certified- always have issue buying any perishibles, everything seems "old" and on it's last legs- buy only staples here. But household items (insect repellent, candles, paper towels and PT, cheap..)
