First time tavelers to aruba at marriot ocean

My girlfriend and I are going down for the first week of November and it will be our first time. We are mid 20s and don't want to spend a fortune on food/drinks but at the same time want to enjoy our vacation. What is the best way to drink and hang by the beach/pool during the day? We plan on eating out a few nights and doing the rest of the meals ourselves. I've read happy hours are a good plan for drink and food specials. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'll be there for my third time in two weeks!

Will you be renting a car? If you are, you can stop at the local grocery store on your way to the hotel from the airport (or you can take the bus there from the hotel and a cab ride "home") to stock up on some easy breakfasts/lunch stuff and some alcohol. Or, if you do eat out nice at night, save some leftovers for lunch the next day. The Ocean Club has microwaves, etc. so it can easily be heated up.

Also, the last time we were there, we did the tour of a timeshare (we don't own) and just for doing the tour, they gave us a $100 dinner card to use at a bunch of different nice places... that's a fairly easy way to earn more food money :)

Smokey Joes is also a short walk from the Ocean Club and their prices aren't that expensive... and their drinks are BIG and STRONG :)

You're gonna love it there!

The Ocean Club is a great choice and I presume your room will have a full kitchen. Take the bus or a cab to the supermarket and get breakfast items and your drinks. Bring with you a collapsable cooler and then take your drinks to the pool/beach with you. You will save a ton of money this way.

You can, of course, eat as many meals that you want in your unit. Smokey Joe's, as previously mentioned, has huge portions for great ribs, and you will probably have enough left over for lunch the next day.

Be sure to go to Claudia's beach bar. Just off the sidewalk between the Holiday Inn and the Playa Linda. Happy hour all day. 2 frozen drinks for $7!

Visit the grocery store for sure. Buy or bring down a cooler with you. we always brought food down to the pool with us and drinks too. The Ocean Club has grills too if you decide to cook out. We had great picnic style dinners a few nights especially with the beautiful weather. The Ocean Club has a microwave and coffee makers. Great place and beautiful beaches. Have fun.

The bus stop is through the parking lot at the front of the hotel. The hotel staff will claim they do not know where it is!!!!

Thank you for your replies much appreciated. We are getting very excited to go.

Does anyone know if you are allowed to fly with liqour in checked bags? I did years ago but that was pre 9-11. We are flying on Delta.

We bring down a few bottles of Vodka every year wrapped in bubble wrap and have never had a problem. In our checked bags though, no carry on.

we have brought a bottle of wine INTO aruba via checked luggage, and usually come home with one or two bottles of liquor from aruba, back into JFK... including this year.

No one has said a word. we purchased a metal wine/booze carrier years back for doing this! works great.

Something like this... napacabs.com/Picnic-Time-Envoy-2-Bottle-Insu…

they make them in 1 - 6 bottle cases... this is just an example. we got ours on ebay for like $30..... we put the bottle in a ziplok freezer bag first, and then in this case... just in case a minor leak develops!

What are your dates? We'll be at the Marriott hotel (next door) 11/4-11. This sounds really cheap - but my husband thinks it's great. While I'm getting ready in the evening to go out for dinner and such, he heads down to the casino and drinks for free while playing some nickel slots. Cheap way to drink for sure.

Defintely pack a soft cooler to bring with you! The local beer is not bad and you can buy that at ling and sons on your way in(for about $30 a case in cans). Corona is like $75?? The taxi driver will stop for you if you do not want to take the bus or another cab. The grills are nice at the resort to grill chicken, burgers or a steak and they have nice picnic areas to use. Someone did tell you about claudias- a tiny little shack like bar down past the holiday inn. Its small and you could miss it if you were not looking for it but its the best deal on the beach, two frozen drinks for $7. Its $$ to drink, especially at the Marriott. Their "happy hour" is BS as they pick the TWO drinks you can choose from for the two for $11 bucks?? Bring your own!! Oh, we bought bottles of booze with us at the airport before we boarded so save room in your carry on bag! Then you can buy mixers at the grocery store and mix your own drinks! You can do it on a budget. Moomba Beach bar, which is right next store to the surf club has excellent ceasar salads and burgers-the prices are decent. The Hiraku (SP??) is right at the surf club too, on the beach and is very nice and they have two can dine for $35 which includes salad, meal and a glass of pinot. And if you do the tour when they tell you they will give you $100 tell them your will do it for $200 or $175 and they should compromise at $150 which is a decent amount to use at area restaurants. We also did drink a lot at the casino where its FREE. They are good too if you tip, they will keep the drinks coming. Very nice staff at the casino and the roulette table supplemented our trips BOTH times. We always walked out winners. I think we were up about $750 both times we were there!! Have fun.
