Suggestions for Honeymoon

Hi all,

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. In reading through these posts, you have all been incredibly helpful already!

We are going to Aruba for the first time from October 20-27 for our honeymoon. We're staying at the Marriott Stallaris on the Tradewind's floor. We already have reservations for Carte Blanche, Two Fools and Bull, and Flying Fishbone.

A few questions:

1. I know Flying Fishbone is a lengthy cab ride; but is it possible to walk to Carte Blanche and Two Fools? We don't mind a long walk.

2. What restaurants would you recommend for the remaining four nights (I am leaning toward Screaming Eagle, Madame Jeanette, and White Modern [does anyone know if the "Kitchen Table by White" is open and, if so, any reviews?]). We would prefer restaurants that are walking distance to the hotel, but will certainly cab it for good food.

3. Any must-do excursions? I am thinking a Black Pearl snorkle and possible a jeep excursion to the Natural Pool. Would also like to try stand-up paddle boarding and kite surfing.

4. Are all the casinos similar? Any favorites? I'm assuming all have free drinks for players. Anyone know where there is a sports book?

5. Where are the best places to go out at night? We are both 30, like to have have fun but prefer laid-back bars with live music to large clubs with DJs.

Thanks so much, all! Any and all recommendations and/or suggestions are appreciated!!

Perhaps it is intentional but this sounds like a very busy schedule. You have chosen some high end restaurants already so you might want to mix in some casual experiences as well. Since you will be at the Marriott consider one evening at Moomba beach bar just past the Surf Club. They have live music some nights. Check their web site for the schedule.

I recommend not adding too many daily activities as relaxing at the beach or by the pool is very pleasant. We have used Strea 3 times so far and enjoy both their sunset cruise and their 4 hour snorkel and sunset private charter. Check the special offers on their web site. Having that boat all to yourselves for the evening is a wonderful experience.

Lunch at the restaurant at Tiera Del Sole is nice. The view is lovely and the crab corn chowder in a bread bowl is delicious. Rent a car for the day and drive up to the lighthouse for sightseeing. One the way back stop here for lunch. Then go downtown for some shopping.

I was also going to recommend some casual restaurants. We don't schedule back to back excursions. You won't like being on a schedule like that. I would take a bus ride or cab into Oranjestad. They have many restaurants there among other things. We have been on a jeep tour to the natural pool, Black Pearl, deep sea fishing, Jolly pirate, atving and we have enjoyed all of those excursions. It is very easy to get around in Aruba. Two miles from Palm beach is eagle beach, two miles from eagle beach is oranjestad.

Black Pearl is really nice....and it is a very short walk from where you're staying. You will need an advance reservation for Black Pearl, these must be done on-line. There are all kinds of water sports available along Palm Beach , again, where you are staying, and no advance reservation is needed for these as opposed to Black Pearl.

You've got only six full days....if you have your heart set on the natural pool, do it, however it really will consume a lot of time.

I agree with the other poster who suggested some casual dining. There are a lot of places within a 15 minute walk from your hotel.

We love Fusion's Bar in Alhambra Casino Plaza. Also on the beach is Mathews and Ricardo's which are pretty reasonable and food is good. Always try to do the Black Pearl Sunset Cruise very nice and not a crowded boat it fits about 20 people.

Let's try to take your questions in order:

1. (a) Flying Fishbone is a fairly lengthy cab ride. (b) 2 Fools is about a 1.25 mile walk which is doable (though many argue that it should not be done because of Aruba weather, or because it is too strenuous for them, or because it might affect their "make-up", or result in profuse sweating or palpitations - you decide if it is something that you want to undertake - it can be done). (c) and Carte Blanche would be about a 3 mile walk and, though we love to walk to as many places as we can and are in fairly good shape, we would not recommend walking to this destination from the Marriott - take a cab directly to the place or a bus to the stop just past Costa Linda or the stop by Alhambra Casino and then walk a short distance to BUCUTI where Carte Blanche is located.

2. Most of your other choices would require either bus or cab service and should not be considered if you want to walk to places. HOWEVER, they are good choices and, if the choices are to prevail over your desire to walk to places, then you might want to go as far as renting a vehicle for the week and enjoying that as well. Having said that, Screaming Eagle is in the neighborhood of Carte Blanche and would require a cab or bus ride. Madame Janette is in a rather nondescript location and would require a cab (bus does not go to the location to the best of our knowledge). White Modern is within walking distance from the Hotel. The Kitchen Table by White opened on August 1, 2014 and details about it are limited at this time. The Kitchen Table by White would most likely require a cab ride (bus does go by it, but we are not sure how close to the actual location it may stop).

Some Places that you might want to also consider are Barefoot (in town - cab ride) and Passions (romantic - dine on the beach - cab or bus) the following restaurants that you can walk to and might want to consider include Wacky Wahoo (great fish), Texas de Brazil or Amazonia - (steakhouses - with great all you can eat buffet type eating), Daniel's, Fishes and More, Ruth Chris (at the Marriott), Les Crustaces (at the adjoining Ritz), and many more. For a map of locations of many restaurants and directions to get to them from the Marriott go to:

and click on the directions tab.

3. In our opinion, must do excursions would include a tour of the Island including the Natural Pool (we prefer ABC as the vendor to do that) and a snorkel cruise (either Tranquillo or Black Pearl - we prefer the first). As far as activities go - there are many vendors for them along the beach near the Marriott and you will have no difficulty finding them or making arrangements with them.

4. In our opinion, all casinos are essentially the same. Our preferences run to the Seaport, Crystal, Alhambra, Occidental Grande, Marriott and Ritz (in no special order) - simply because we do better there (i.e. lose less). Casinos generally are smoky and that gets worse as the day wears on. All do have drinks for their patrons - we are sure that they would appreciate a reasonable tip for them. To the best of our knowledge and recollection, there are sports books at the Seaport, Holiday Inn, and Occidental Grande Casinos. Of the three only the Seaport (in Town) has some appeal and appears to be reasonably run.

5. We are not night people - so we leave that question to others to respond to.

We tend to agree that your agenda is a bit ambitious and busy but, if that is what you want, then go for it.

Because of the agenda, as indicated above, you might want to consider renting a car - by the time you have paid for all the cab fares, you probably could have paid for the car. Driving in Aruba is fairly easy and the independence and luxury of having your own vehicle is nice. There is no way to get lost - the place is an Island - follow the bend of the Divi Trees and you will eventually come to civilization and the experience of feeling lost in Aruba can add to any trip. Figure a weekly car rental of about $200.00 versus the cost of trips from and to the airport and several trips to several restaurants and you will rapidly get to the neighborhood of the $200.00 level. Trip to and from Flying Fishbone itself will run you something like $60.00 (do not have cab rate schedule in front of us so that is an approximation). If you do choose to walk to all restaurants then that might be an argument against this suggestion - you decide. Would recommend Wheels2Go as a good place to rent - if that is the way you choose to go.

Hope this is helpful.

Have a great honeymoon trip to ARUBA.

You might want to consider dinner on the beach at most hotels in the high rise section, which is where the Marriott is. In fact, Simply Fish is right there. We have not taken part in any of these dinner's, but I have heard many people talk about how they enjoyed them; sitting in candle light on the beach with your toes in the sand, etc.

Between you and the far end of Palm Beach (apprx. 1 mile) is a boardwalk that gets you to: Marriott Ocean Club, Marriott Surf Club, Playa Linda, Hyatt, Occidental, Radisson, Riu. Most of these have dinners on the beach. Going in the other direction (northward) you have the new Ritz; not sure what they offer as we only did a walk through about a week after they were open.

Also, every hotel has their "signature" restaurant; you can check that out with the concierge at the Marriott after you check in. The Marriott is "home" to Ruth's Chris; it is very nice, but expensive.

Good luck to you, congratulations, and enjoy your honeymoon in Aruba.
