June Sailing Races

I am considering visiting Bermuda in June, to celebrate my daughter's 50th birthday.

I have heard that during Rigatta Races the town

"shuts down". If I booked during that time, would

we have difficulty taking the bus to the South Shore

beaches, for example? Or difficulty

Getting into Hamilton for dinner going by ferry?

I have not contacted Salt Kettle House yet to see

if they have any room available that month (I know, I know, it is late to be planning,) and if I have

no availability there we may consider a cruise.

We visited in May last year, and it was great. But, my daughter's hoping for a June get away.

I'm not sure where you heard that, "...the town 'shuts down' ..."...but boy did you ever hear WRONG. If you mean Race Week (usually the 3rd week in June) for the biennial NEWPORT-BERMUDA RACE (even-years) or MARION-BERMUDA RACE (odd-years)--the annual Annapolis-Bermuda Race also arrives around the same time-frame---then Bermuda is never busier...restaurants fuller or bars and clubs hotter. Sailors have a genuine knack for havin' a good time...especially at the end of a four or five day slog across the Stream....and Bermuda welcomes them with open arms....and oceans of Rum Swizzles to wash away salt spray. It's a week-long party....with family and friends flying in (with clean underwear for crews) to join in the celebrations. Public transportation--buses and ferries--run as normal....though it's usually a good idea to pre-reserve motorscooters....which can become scarce when the race fleet is in, along with regular high-season air and cruise arrivals

The small SALT KETTLE GUESTHOUSE is usually fully booked for the Race Week period every year...as are many of the other guest houses in and around Hamilton and Saint George's, where the race fleet ties up. In the event that Salt Kettle is fully booked...check out these other modest accommodations-

I just noticed your BOWIE, MD location....20-25 miles from McGarvey's and Riordan's on Market Square in Annapolis and O'Leary's over in Eastport...shame on you.

Closer than than! 12 miiles at most to the

Annapolis Harbor!

Well, I don't know who told me, but they seemed to

think everyone would be at the races, and all businesses would be closed so that they could

attend.

Glad to hear otherwise.

Wouldn't it be kind of difficult for everyone to be at the races when they take place quite a distance off shore - plus I don't believe that the average Bermudian is into yacht racing as they are into rugby. Just thinking and writing vicariously via this Forum.....

>>>everyone would be at the races,<<<

These are long distance, point-to-point---Newport-to-Bermuda, Marion-to-Bermuda, Annapolis-to-Bermuda---ocean races. Once they pass Saint David's light, the racing is over...and the partying begins. The only racing they do in Bermuda is between the dock and the bar, once the last mooring line has been secured.
