Weather in December- warm enough to swim in the water?

We are thinking of going to Bermuda at the end of December. Does anyone know if it will be warm enough to lie on the beach and sun tan or go in the water?

Also, where is the best part to stay in Bermuda? We are looking for some night life, sight seeing, and a nice beach. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Given that you're evidently a denizen of the '..Great White North..'...you might find the Ocean Water Temps during December--mid-60°s--quite 'refreshing'. But the rest of we mere mortals will probably turn bright blue after a few minutes...and experience severe teeth-chattering.

I have certainly sat sunbathing on the beach in December and January and last week at the Hamilton Princess a few brave Americans were using the hotel pool

It depends on how warm you are looking for

Night life is mainly concentrated in Hamilton - but that is a small town not a beach resort

Being from Canada, you might find the water temps o.k., but you would pretty much have to be a polar bear.

We went in April and I wore a shortie wet suit to snorkel and I only lasted a short time and I consider myself a polar bear and go in water when no one else will.

However, laying out was comfortable with the sun shining on you. But I wouldn't plan a trip for December to Bermuda if you are looking for water-based activities.

Just my opinion.

What about late May? We will be there the 20th and was wondering about the water temperature then?

There's a 'tradition' (of sorts) on Bermuda that Bermudians won't usually swim in the ocean until Bermuda Day, May 24th. But then, Bermudians have the ocean a few steps from their doors every day of the year; so they can afford the 'tradition'. Visitors only have it for the few days of their visit.

The water temp '..comfort range..' for swimming for most people usually runs somewhere around 15°-to-20° below their normal body temperature (denizens of the 'Great White North' excepted...as they're usually more concerned with diving head-first into floe ice and polar bear picnics). Average Ocean Water Temps for Bermuda in late-May usually run in the range of 72°-to-74°. While this may still a bit on the 'brisk' side of the 'comfort zone'; it still usually suits.

Thanks....sounds doable for a swim but a bit low for snorkeling. Are the flowers in full bloom then?

May is a GREAT month for gardens and flowers on Bermuda.

If you're into gardening, the GARDEN CLUB of BERMUDA offers tour of many of Bermuda's private garden. Save the organization's web site to the FAVORITES list on your computer...and check again later in the New Year for the schedule for 2009's '..Open Houses & Gardens..' tours.

It would also be a grand time of year to take an escorted tour of the BERMUDA BOTANICAL GARDENS--

--Tuesdays and Fridays 12noon – 2:00pm. only

--Tours meet at the Berry Hill entrance near Botanical Gardens Visitor’s Centre.

We just returned from a week in Bermuda. I though it was a bit cold to swim, but noticed that water was warmer in some spots. We stayed at the Fairmont Southampton, the water seemed cold at their private beach, but the water seemed fine at Horseshoe Bay Beach. Being from Texas, it was too cold to swim on the beach, but I had to give scuba a try.

I went scuba diving and had a full wet suit on. As soon as I got in the water, I didn't think about the water temperature and focused on breathing. The dive was great. It was my first time to dive a wreck. The second dive was full of great swim through's. Good stuff.

I couldn't complain about the water temp during the dive at all. Every local that I told I went diving looked at my like I was nuts, though.

Have fun,

Rob
