Considering Bermuda

Wife and I have been all around the Carribean. Bahamas, USVI, BVI, Cozumel, Belize, FL Keys, and Aruba. I'm now researching Bermuda as I do every location prior to going, mostly on this site. Bermuda has me intrigued. Here's how we normally travel.

We prefer condos...don't like the crowdedness of hotels and don't require their services.

We like to explore on our own. Have rented cars/scooters everywhere we go and I always drive, left or right! This can be a little un-nerving sometimes but we like to explore on our own terms, not on someone else's agenda.

We never go AI. We like to get out and try different restaurants.

Veggin at the beach is nice, but we like to have other things to entertain us as well. Don't suggest golf, wife doesn't play.

I dive.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. From my initial research I am assuming:

A condo directly on the beach can't be found? Closest usually across the street from the beach?

We would most likely be renting a scooter. I'm assuming you can see all the island comfortably and safely on one?

Seems to be plenty of good diving?

Thanks in advance for your replys. Also Bermuda doesn't have a "sticky" on its forum with FAQs like most other destinations do.

First of all, when are you going? As you know, Bermuda is not in the Caribbean so what kind of weather will you expect? See www.weather.bm

If you are interested in renting then take a look at www.bermudarentals.com and www.bermudagetaway.com You might also find The St George's Club of interest. The Reefs also has some rental units. Do you have any idea what price range you are prepared to pay?

A quick look at the hotels listed at the left of this page wouldn't hurt. Many hotels in Bermuda are what are called cottage colonies so quite different from the high rises in the Caribbean and other resorts that you have visited.

Elbow Beach for instance is right on the beach and accommodation is mostly in cottage style units.

Bermuda has great reef and wreck diving (afterall...the place was originally colonized by shipwrecked sailors...and the waters are famously littered with wrecks). There are a few good dive operations. From several friends who dive, most seem to prefer--

and others have been very happy with--

Other good dive operators are--

There are no rental cars in Bermuda...but you can certainly make your way about on rental motor scooters. Scooters provide the most flexibility for personal transport--along your own routes, on your own schedule, making the stops and detours you prefer...and they're a whole lotta' FUN. Bermuda has excellent roads (if often narrow and winding)...though traffic is occasionally heavy, in certain areas, at certain times of the day.

The alternative to rental scooters is Bermuda's excellent public transportaion--buses & ferries--system. With gas at $7-$8 per gallon, taxi fares tend to be high.

There are several good scooter rental liveries. We've (as well as nuimerous family, friends and acxquaintances) been renting mopeds and motor scooters from OLEANDER CYCLES-- http://www.oleandercycles.bm/ --for decades and always been VERY SATISFIED with the rates, equipment and service. They're probably the largest cycle rental operation in Bermuda, with rental and service locations from end-to-end and shore to shore.

Other good motoer scooter rental liberies are--

Though there are no '..sticky's..' on this Bermuda page...there is a BERMUDA TRAVEL page that you can refer to for basic information--

There are no stinkers in Bermuda, the water/beaches never far away- I happen to like The Paraquet Apartments and Restaurant- for numerous reasons- cost is just one of them.

In addition to the many fine private rental properties available through the Bermuda Rentals and Bermuda Getaway agencies...you might also check out these, south shore, ocean-front private rental properties overlooking Marley Beach--

and these two south shore, ocean-front cottages at Grape Bay Beach--
