Proposed itinerary sanity check

We are arriving 17 Aug at 3 p.m. on RCCL Grandeur. We want to either walk or take a taxi to Sea Glass Beach. Then in the evening go to Bermuda Fun Golf.

Day 2 we are booked on the morning Bermuda Triangle Shipwreck Snorkel. After lunch, we want to take the orange ferry from the Dockyards to St. George. We are planning the St. George's Olde Towne Railway Train Tour to see the sites. My husband wants to go to Spittol Pond Nature Reserve. (How much time should we plan to spend here?). Then we want to take the bus to Elbow Beach and walk the beaches south. I am guesstimating that we will get to the beaches about 5 p.m. - I want to take advantage of late lighting for pictures. (How late do the beaches stay open?) (How long does it take to walk from Elbow to Horseshoe Bay?) (Can you walk the entire thing?) The sun sets at 8 p.m. that night so I am guessing we will want to find a bus back to the boat. Will that be hard at that time?

Day 3 we want to take the earliest ferry into Hamilton. We are still debating on how and what to see in Hamilton. We are then thinking we can go back to the beaches for an hour or two. We have a 2 p.m. Jet Ski's tour at Somerset Bridge. We have to be back to the ship by 6 for departure.

I am traveling with my overly-active husband (which means action not museums or much historical sites), a 21 year-old, a 20 year-old and a 17 year-old.

Any recommendations/ideas are very much appreciated.

>>>...My husband wants to go to Spittol Pond Nature Reserve. (How much time should we plan to spend here?)....<<<

Hard to say how long you'd want to spend exploring the Spittal Pond Nature Reserve, in Smith's Parish, along the South Road. There are some great photo ops here. But to some it's just an undeveloped tract of land with no restaurant or bar...and to others its a natural wonder. You can count on it taking you approx. 35 minutes from the main Bus terminal in downtown Saint George's. via the #1--Saint George's-Hamilton public bus route. The #1 bus route is one of the most scenic in Bermuda. The route will take you from Saint George's, across the Castle Harbour inlet, 'round the eastern side of the inland Harrington Sound, through a couple of manicured, palm-lined golf courses in Tucker's Town, then out onto Bermuda's southeastern shore at John Smith's Bay before getting to the South Road entrance to SPITTAL POND. From here, you reboard another #1 bus at the same bus stop (PINK POLE) for the ride the rest of the way into downtown Hamilton. The #1 bus route enters Hamilton at the end-of-the-harbor and runs all along the Hamilton Harbour waterfront on Front Street before heading up to the main BUS terminal in downtown Hamilton. (approx. 25 mins).

>>>...Then we want to take the bus to Elbow Beach and walk the beaches south...<<<

From the main BUS terminal ion downtown Hamilton, transfer over to ANY #7--Hamilton-Via South Shore Beaches-Dockyard or #7--Hamilton-Barnes Corners bus to the stops above ELBOW BEACH. The walk down to the beach from the bus stop at the entrance drive to the Elbow Beach Hotel (approx. 12-15 mins)most direct access) will be approx. 500 yards.

>>>...(How late do the beaches stay open?)...<<<

24/7/365...the beaches don't close.

>>>..(How long does it take to walk from Elbow to Horseshoe Bay?) (Can you walk the entire thing?)...<<<

The distance between Elbow Beach and Horseshoe Bay will be approx. four(4) miles. A pretty good '..hike..' but not really '..comfortable..' walking distance. Simply head back up to the bus stop up on the South Road and take another #7 bus the rest of the way (approx. 15 mins).

If you're interested in great photo ops then I'd suggest that you take the #7 bus only as far as the stop for WARWICK LONG BAY/JOBSON'S COVE (ask the bus driver). From here, walk down the short entrance drive to the sand at Warwick Long Bay and begin walking west (to your right as you face the ocean) along the sandy footpaths through the dunes and along the clifftops above the foreshore (always try to stay close to the ocean). This walking route will take you from Warwick Long Bay to the 'natural pool' at JOBSON'S COVE...then STONEHOLE BAY and CHAPLIN BAY just beyond...keep along the footpaths 'above' along the clifftops...past the Elephant Head promontory jutting out into the ocean (great 'long' south shore photo-ops from here) then past (above) the several, semi-secluded little beaches and coves (Hidden Beach, Angle Beach, Wafer Rocks Beach, Middle Beach, Butts Beach, Peel Rock Cove) between here and HORSESHOE BAY beach. As you go, the clifftops drop and you can acess these beaches from the dunes behind and 'beachcomb' down along the foreshore to Horseshoe Bay Beach. You can fill-up the capacity of a large memory card (or three) in your camera with photos taken along this stretch. The distance from Warwick Long Bay to Horseshoe Bay is approx. one(1) mile...perhaps the MOST PICTURESQUE mile in all Bermuda.

From Horseshoe Bay, walk up the entrance drive to the bus stop up on the South Road. For the bus ride back to DOCKYARD you need to take either the '..SPECIAL..' (route board on front of bus) express (no intermediate stops en route) bus route directly to DOCKYARD (approx. 30 mins)...OR...a 'regular' #7--Hamilton-Via South Shore Beaches-Dockyard bus. ( **NOT** a #7 Hamilton-BARNES CORNERS designated bus. The '..#7-Barnes Corners..' bus route does **NOT** go all the way to Dockyard.

An alternative is to look for either a taxi or one of the private beach shuttles that work the route between Dockyard and Horseshoe Bay beach. You'll usually find 'em pulled up near the Horseshoe Bay beach house/café.

Metered taxi fare will probably be approx. $30...private shuttle fare $8-$12 per person (????)
