Staying at Wyndham - need food suggestions for family of 4...

Hi all - great forum. I have read about the dining options at the Wyndham, and no doubt we'll use them a few times. We'll also pack some food - but we don't want to do everything there - and want to have a few 'inexpensive' meals as well. Can I get some advice on the following:

1. Grocery store/market near Wyndham? (and importantly - can wine be purchased there?)

2. Gibbs Lighthouse Tea Room breakfast - pricey? I know its close by.

3. Any other family friendly restaurants/lunch places/breakfast places that are not too far that we can consider?

4. Two or three surefire dinner suggestions that are kid friendly...willing to go into Hamilton or out to St. George's at least a time or two....

thank you -

Almost across the street from the Wyndham on South Road is the Henry VIII pub.

Good option for a family, all sorts of choices for every palate.

Right next door to the pub is a liquor shop selling wines, liquors etc.....I also think they had some convenience store items, not sure.

Everything on Bermuda is above average in price so be forewarned.

The Lighthouse Tea Room serves lunch as well and sometimes dinner. The view is fantastic. The prices are moderate for Bermuda and the food is very good.

There is a grocery store on Middle Road near the intersection with Cobbs Hill Road which you can probably reach by public transportation in ten minutes.

There is a pizza type restaurant right at the top of the hill and left from the entrance to Horseshoe Bay.

Try the White Horse pub in St. George, the Frog and Onion in Dockyard and the HogPenny in Hamilton for reasonably priced pub food. MR Onions and Montys in Hamilton for other options. Miles Grocery in Hamilton just off Pitts Bay Road has very good takeout.

Have fun. Bermuda is another world.

On your way either from Hamilton or from Dockyard there are markets that you can stop off at to purchase foods / snacks and beer/wine/liquor. The larger supermarket between Dockyard and Wyndham is the MARKET PLACE--http://www.marketplace.bm/ --in Somerset and the smaller one between Hamilton and Wyndham is the HARRINGTON HUNDREDS. In either direction, simply ask the bus driver.

The LIGHT HOUSE TEA ROOM, up at the base of Gibb's Hill Light, is moderately priced for breakfasts--check out their menus w/ prices at-- http://www.bermudalighthouse.com/tearoom.htm --but it will be a bit of a hike along the South Raod and up the hill from the Wyndham. About 10-12 minutes along the #7 bus route between the Wyndham and Hamilton is the PARAQUET RESTAURANT (more '..diner..' than restaurant) , which offers modestly priced breakfasts, kunches and dinners.

Almost ANY reataurant on Bermudawill be '..kid-friendly..' to well behaved and well-parented children (Bermudians love kids...but are less thrilled by lazy parents when kids act like kids). But for more informal, relaxed, moderately-priced places, try---

LA TRATTORIA--

HOG PENNY PUB--

PORTOFINO'S--

The PUB at HENRY VIII--

SWIZZLE INN SOITH SHORE (new 'branch' location of a Bermuda '..institution..'.--was Paw Paw's)

From the bus stop up on the South Road at the Wyndham entrance drive it will be approx 15 minutes by bus to the smaller HARRINGTON HUNDREDS market (and you get to ride past those spectacular ocean views). The bus ride from Wyndham to the much larger, MARKET PLACE supermarket in Somerset will be approx. 25 minutes (and the ride ain't too shabby headin' on this direction either). In either case, there are bus stops right at each market. If you do head toward Somerset, be sure to make sure that the #7 bus for the return to the Wyndham is one that goes out along the South Shore Beaches. SOME buses heading toward Hamilton from Dockyard/Somerset DON'T.

Before you leave for Bermuda, take a little time to look at the Bus & Ferry routes, schedules and other info.....to get some idea of how the system works, where, how and when it goes there...and use the average run-times at each route to get some rough estimate of how long it might take to get from place-to-place ('..Sonesta Beach..', the old hotel name, is the stop for the Wyndham Bermuda)---

http://www.gov.bm/portal/server.pt

The complete URL is too long for TA so use the '..TRANSPORT..' tab at the top of the homepagea nd then Select, '..Buses..' or '..Ferries..' from the drop-down menu.

With four kids (who usually consume the contents of refrigerators and pantries the way most adults breath in air) you might also keep the telephone number of--FOUR STAR PIZZA Delivery-- http://www.fourstar.bm/ ---handy. They even have internet Coupons ($4 Off 2 Large) you can print-out, clip and take along.

What did you think of the Wyndham? I have seen such mixed/bad reviews. I am leaving tomorrow w/kids and a little nervous. Third time to Bermuda should have stayed at the Princess, I was hoping for some great changes after it changed from the Sonesta.
