Where to stay?

I'll be going to Bermuda for the first time next summer but know so little about the area I'm not even sure where to begin to start planning. Ideally I'd like a place right on the beach that's not too crowded (!!) and has a restaurant. Would anyone have any recommendations?

Also, is there a town center or anything with dining/shops? And are any of the hotels in walking proximity to this?

The Reefs, Elbow Beach Hotel, Coco Reef, Pompano Beach, Cambridge Beaches are your best options for being on the beach with dining. Hamilton and St George are your choices for in-town dining and shopping mostly. These areas are not located on the famed South Shore Beaches of Bermuda. However, ferries, buses and cabs are plentiful to get you around. There is a wealth of info on this board so look around a bit to get a sense of the island.

Keep in mind, on the beach is double/triple the cost. You can find apartments- cook your own food or be close to a restaurant and a 10 minute walk to a Beach. Example- try Clairfont Restaurant and Apartments for $200.00 per night- clean and right near bus stop(will be able to see numerous beaches) or walk to Elbow Beach.

There are numerous other places- get Frommer's Book- will tell all...

The above listed properties will suit your criteria quite nicely and also be among the best small hotels and 'cottage' colonies' that Bermuda has to offer.

Though not in quite the same '..claas..' as the above, you might also check out GROTTO BAY BEACH RESORT and WILLOWBANK

Bear in mind that Bermuda is a tiny place--21 square miles of land mass..approx. 21 miles from end-to-end...perhaps 3-4 miles from shore-to-shore...perhaps 26-28 miles via narrow, serpentine roads from end-to-end. So nowhere is very far from anywhere else in Bermuda...and '..getting there..' is almost always a genuine pleasure.

The practical '..center..' of Bermuda will be the City of Hamilton (not to be confused with Hamilton Parish). Downtown Hamilton has the largest concentration of dining alternatives (all types, cuisines, prices) shopping, nightlife (pubs, bars, dance clubs) and is also the nexus of Bermuda's excellent public transportation system (buses & ferries). Public transportation will take you to (or near to) just about everywhere you might want to go during your visit. It will take sixty(60) very pleasant minutes via bus to get from Hamilton to the historic '..olde towne..' of Saint George's at Bermuda's far east-end...twenty(20) very pleasant minutes minutes via ferry or sixty(60) very pleasant minutes via bus to get to the Royal Naval Dockyard complex at Bermuda's far west-end...fifteen(15)-to-thirty-five(35) very pleasant minutes (with some genuine 'take-your-breath-away' views along the way) via bus to get out to Bermuda's magnificent south shore beaches.

It's also worth noting that Bermuda's very best beaches are public beaches. Even the very best private '..hotel beach..' will only be '..2nd best..' to many of '..Resort Bermuda's..' entirely '..public..' beaches. So, unlike many other island/beach destinations, you do not have to stay at a '..beachfront..' hotel or guest accommodation to enjoy free access to the best beaches in Bermuda.
