Elbow Beach vs. Southhampton Princess

Welcome any thoughts on choosing between these places for a five night stay. Advantages/disadvantages? Thanks.

The ELBOW BEACH HOTEL offers more variety in accommodation type--rooms & suites in the main hotel building or rooms & suites in 'cottages' on the lushly landscaped, lower grounds of the hotel property, between mani building and Elbow Beach.

Elbow Beach is also closer and more convenient to downtown Hamilton for many more dining alternatives (cuisines & prices) shopping, nightlife. Downtown Hamilton is also the nexus for Bermuda's excellent public transportation system.

For preference, a room of suite in one of the 'cottages' on the lower-grounds offers a nice compromise between large, full service resort/hotel and smaller, more intimate, 'boutique hotel' or traditional Bermudian 'cottage colony'.

The FAIRMONT Southampton HOTEL offers perhaps the best on-premises spa in Bermuda and its own 'executive-length' par-e golf course.

NEITHER has much--or any--'edge' over the other in terms of on-premises dining...though the SEAHORSE GRILL at the Elbow Beach Hotel is one of Bermuda finner dining option.

Thanks. Do you know what the deal is on getting to the beach at the Princess...do they shuttle you down....looks like Elbow is right on beach, but Princess is on other side of the road?

There are hotel shuttles/trolleys that run regularly (every 15 mins from 8 AM-until-Midnight) from the main lobby/entrance down the front-entrance drive, to the beach club/restaurants and main South Road entrance (for the #7-Hamilton-Via South Shore Beaches-Dockyard bus route...the bus for south shore beaches)....and down the back-entrance drive to the Waterlot Inn for the private ferry across to the Fairmont Hamilton Princess and Middle Road back-entrance (for the #8--Hamilton Dockyard bus route).. It's also worth noting that the shuttle/trolley stop at the hotel's beach club...there is a short path (100 yards) that connects to the entrance to Horseshoe Bay beach.

At the Elbow Beach Hotel, it will depend on whether you are staying in the main hotel building at the top of the hill...or one of the 'cottages' (flower-named) on the lower-grounds. In either case, the hotel offers on-demand, mini-van or golf cart shuttle service between the main hotel entrance/lobby or your 'cottage' and the beach club/restaurants.

You could probably walk the few hundred yards DOWN the hills to the beach clubs at either the Fairmont Southampton or Elbow Beach hotel easily enough...but its' worth noting that their are no Emergency Oxygen or Defibrillator stations or call-boxes for Emergency Medical Services along the routes during the '..ascent..' back UP to the top.

I'm a bigger fan of the Elbow Beach vs. The Fairmont property. First, Elbow Beach is managed by Mandarin Oriental and that alone makes for an exceptional stay when it comes to service. I also prefer the location of Elbow Beach. I have stayed at both and if you stay in a suite outside of the main building then you are getting much more of a Caribbean experience rather than staying in a large hotel building with a fairly standard room (it's like you could be staying anywhere).

We travelled with our young daughter to Elbow Beach and they were overly accommodating with her, which won bonus points.

Whatever you decide, Bermuda is just such a lovely island - you can't go wrong.

Just a note about Elbow Beach hotel--the future is a bit uncertain at this point:http://www.bermudasun.bm/main.asp?SectionID=24&SubSectionID=270&ArticleID=42973

While the article says there are not plans for closure, the rumor mill here in the right circles say it is a possibility, especially after this past year of really bad tourism numbers.

Just something to think about, as you may be planning your trip in the somewhat distant future. Either place can be great. I personally like South P better, but I think it may be because we had a pretty shabby room at Elbow. If you go to Elbow, definitely splurge a bit on a suite--you will be very happy with that decision.

Rumors abouth the Elbow Beach Hotel have circulated for years--ever since Sir Charles Moore died and the hotel was sold. The hotel has quietly changed owners a few times..and with each change of owners, the rumors have been revived. So far, the only notable changes have been in management partners. But this most recent rumor--which was revived this past summer--was sufficient for the GM, Frank Stocek, to deny it publically--

www.royalgazette.com/rg/Article/article.jsp…

The rumors have taken on greater 'credibility' since official, EBH denials of the rumors haven't really been 'denials' at all...and given the general direction of tourism properties' redvelopment over the past several years, the rumors begin to build credibility, in the,'..even if it ain't true...it damn well could be..' sense. Portions of the main building of the EBH are old (over 100 years old) and basic infrastructure--no matter how well maintained--ears out.

Like I said, I never believe things until I see it, but the rumors have been getting louder and more frequent--and coming from people who are 'in the know' about issues like that. So, moral of the story, I wouldn't plan anything there long term--just in case!
