car hire the best option

Is hiring a car the best way to see the Island and it's many attractions,or would guided tours be the best option.? When you hire a car do you get a detailed road map and is navigating around Barbados difficut.

Thanks

The answer really is what do you prefer? Do you enjoy sightseeing by yourself, using maps and information available via guide books, enjoying seeing things for yourself? Do you enjoy being driven around and having things explained to you?

The expense of a rented car is much less than taking a tour, but it's really a matter of what you like to do.

When you rent a car you do get a map of the island and can find any place you want but you will also take a few wrong turns but eventually get to where you want to go.

When you arrive at the airport you can pick up a little booklet call Barbados in a Nutshell which gives you quite a bit of information plus a reasonably good map.

Take a look at Google Earth "Maps" and you'll get a good view of the island and the road system.

I know Sarah at Glory Tours has an option that you can hire her as a private driver for so many hours a day and she's available whenever you need her. Check it out at www.glorytours.org

We always rent a car, but signage is not that great and you can get lost although people are helpful regarding telling you how to find some place. There is a good holiday map that is in the Nutshell (you can pick this up at the airport when you arrive at the Tourist Office - we find this is the best one.

Car rental does give you the option of coming and going when you want, but sometimes it is nice to hear interesting facts about where you are and history, etc., which is what Sarah provides.

We usually get good rentals through Stoutes Cars.

We always hire a Jeep from Stoutes who we have found very reliable & competetive with prices.

We like the freedom our own transport gives us.

You always get lost but that is half the fun as you discover new places! The locals are really helpful though & will soon put you right

I agree with Lois and 'verderose' regarding Stoutes Car Rentals. Ann Stoute can be e-mailed and will usually give a discount for booking online. We have used her company five times and have no complaints whatsoever. We usually book a Suzuki Vitara, whether it is 2 or 4 of us, and really enjoy it.

And, actually, as 'verderose' says, you get maps and you might get lost but it doesn't matter. A little bit of adventure is fun! We came across St Nicholas Abbey enroute to somewhere else, and what a wonderful distraction that proved to be.

We have never felt vulnerable or unsafe.
