The system is currently located about 225 mi. souteast of Barbados. Not classified as TS yet but this appears likely at any moment.

All interested should follow progress though National Hurricane Centre website:

Thanks, UpandawayMontreal. A national shutdown was been ordered because the island is under hurricane warning.

A national shutdown order has been issued and all Barbadians must be indoors by 12:30 a.m.

Barbados is now under hurricane warning with Tropical Storm Tomas packing maximum sustained winds of near 65 miles per hour, according to the weather bulletin issued at 11 p.m. Friday. The first warning of bad weather came around 3 p.m. Friday with an official advisory issued two hours later.

The National Hurricane Centre in Miami is predicting that Tomas could become a hurricane by early Saturday morning as it passes near Barbados and moves across the other Windward islands. (CM)

This one certainly caught us off guard - not much warning time at all.

Nasty sting in the tail of the hurricane season - looks like it will pass over St Vincent but this is a huge system so will affect nearly all of the islands. Check http://www.stormpulse.com/ for the predicted paths that it will take.

This from Storm Carib

******- Current Update

By "Mark M " Date: Sat, 30 Oct 2010 09:05:53 +0000

Electricity off in most parts if not islandwide. Winds are extremely high and

constant. Reports indicate roofs off, trees down and damage across the island.

Guys this seems to be the big one.

Sounds like Barbados is getting high winds at the moment, stay safe everyone and hope you don't sustain too much damage.

Thinking of everyone in BIM at the moment and hoping this is not the one everyone's been worrying about. We were lucky enough to be on the BA flight returning to the UK yesterday evening, but knew we were lucky to be leaving especially when the rain started as we were leaving and we flew through considerable cloud. Can't imagine today's flight will be going. Seems it is currently a TS, but expected to become a hurricane shortly
