How can I sail away from Barbados to another island?

Posted a question re flying from Barbados, because of lack of flights to caribbean from north uk, which got carried off, and didn't help me much I'm afraid. Sorry, hope it helped someone!

What about island hopping? Ferries, charters, short cruises? We like Barbados, but have visited several times, and want a change, so is it possible to stretch further by water? Just come back for few days and then flight home?

We just don't want the hassle, overnight stay or day long wait to get to/from London airports from north west.

Thank you

You can look into chartering a yacht to sail to another island. This will be a pricy venture.

You can also contact Chantours who do tours to the Grenadines. http://www.chantours.com/

You can contact Mustique Airways or Executive Air which provide air services to other islands.

Hope this helps somewhat.

The following links list the contacts and information for all sorts of sailing. I suggest you take a look and contact some to see what they offer or what they can do for you. The possibility certainly exists it's just finding what you want.

Best of Luck

There are no yacht charter companies based here so your sailing options are virtually non-existent. Also, even if you somehow got on a boat, the sailing back to Barbados from any of the nearby islands is quite a chore and not a whole lot of fun (I've done Martinique- Barbados on a sailboat, and it was rough, slow and uncomfortable as it almost always is coming that direction). There used to be a freighter that had accommodations and went to St. Lucia. I think it was called the MV Windward but don't know if it still operates or if that's even the right name! Best bet is to do a small puddle-jumper flight, or Liat has some new flights to get you into the Grenadines if you wanted to pick up a charter boat there and enjoy some of the best sailing in the world.

We looked into this a few years ago and opted for a week on Barbados to acclimatise, puddle jumper to St Vincent, chartered a boat & a skipper from http://www.barefootyachts.com/ who were great, we then sailed for 6 days through the grenadines visiting Bequia, mayreux, salt whistle bay, the cays, mustique, canuoan & more, please excuse spelling and not sure of the order, then we flew out of Union island and back to Bds, it was a fantastic experience finished of with 3 days at the Crane which we subsequently fell in love with and regularly return to.

Barbados is over 100 miles from the nearest island. So island-hopping isn't really an option. If you're looking for easy, line-of-sight sailing you'll need to go to the BVI. The closest you'll come to that in the Windwards is through the Grenadines. There are also common routes that leave the Moorings base at St. Lucia and travel down to the Grenadines but it's usually a one-way trip. As InBarbados said, you do not want to sail upwind to return unless you're an expert and hardy sailor. That path will beat you down and wear you out. Not for the casual sailor.

As Ashbriar said, your best bet is to take Grenadines Air Alliance from Barbados to St. Vincent or Union island, then charter through the Grenadines. There used to be a Moorings base in Canouan but I'm not sure it's still there since AA has stopped service.

Once in the Grenadines, there are several charter boats and companies available (if you're looking for a crewed charter). One is:

We've sailed this boat when it was owned by a friend of ours and it's lovely. The boat has since been sold and we don't know the new owner or anything about his operation but you get a chance to sail on a locally built (in Carriacou), wooden boat instead the more common fiberglass, mass-produced yachts available through the bigger charter companies.
