Free Spending Vouchers

We are now into week 4 of the Barbados Island inclusive 'free spending' voucher programme.

Has anyone used the vouchers yet and can report back on the concept?

I issued some at the end of last week to some of our guests. They (a couple) were given a booklet of 8 coupons each valued at BDS$50.00 to be spent a number of different locations. They had to sign to say they had received the booklet. When spending the vouchers, no change is given, so if you want to purchase something for $70.00, you either pay with 2x $50 and receieve no change, or pay $50.00 voucher and $20.00 cash.

The amount you receieve in vouchers varies depending on where you have travelled from and your length of stay.

Just find it interesting that 24 hours after posting this question that not a single person has responded that they have used a voucher. Restaurants and car rental agencies approached have also replied that they have not redeemed a single voucher. 4 weeks since the initiative was launched. I also posted the same question on the BTA FaceBook page and also no response.

P&Q, would BTA not know how many vouchers have been used? Do the vendors not return the vouchers to the BTA/Ministry?

NorthernCanuck1,

I wish it was that simple. Getting information out of the BTA is like pulling teeth, even when you are a board member (Director).

That was public tax money spent to set up this voucher scheme, that should be public knowledge. Are the vouchers returned to BTA/ministry so the vendor gets his compensation?

Pleased to report that one of the participating restaurants have reported that they have redeemed following BII vouchers:

UK - 7

Europe - 5

Brazil -1

Surprised none from Canada or US.

Bearing in mind that any stay booked prior to the launch of the initiative doesn`t qualify, it doesn`t surprise me that not many vouchers have been redeemed yet. I`ve just booked for November so am looking forward to using my vouchers then.

Dear Peach and Quiet,

let's be realistic: the programme has been launched the 1st of May. To be entitled to receive the voucher, you should have booked an hotel room after the first of may, for at least a week. How many people have booked an hotel room the 5th of may to be here the 20th???

I honestly guess that we will see the full effect of the programme in August (hopefully) and later, in October/November.

up to now, anyhow, I've been very pleased with the result.

regards

Alfredo
