I have visited quite a number of times for Sunday buffet lunch which is normally very enjoyable as they have a steel pan band playing.

We stayed once for a few nights. I really like Southern Palms. It has a lovely kind of 'old world' charm about it, and the beach is gorgeous. We had a suite which was very nice. I remember eating at Southsea restaurant, which is good - but not cheap! I think we also ate at Bellinis Italian restaurant which was quite nice. However, there are a lot of restaurants in St Lawrence Gap, and I would imagine most serve fish. I am not sure if maybe Pisces fish restaurant is close by?

I was last there around Easter time and there was no construction work going on then, but maybe they have some refurb work going on now, as it is quite normal for a lot of hotels to do this kind of work at this time of year.

I am sure you will have a great time!

Thanks Donnygirl. I have brought up a previous blog which I thought may be of interest - Accra vs Southern Palms.

Yes Pisces is an easy stroll from Southern Palms but there's loads of other restaurants in walking distance too and, even if they aren't specialist fish restaurants, there will be fish on the menu.

Haven't heard about construction at Southern Palms but there is/was some ongoing at a neighbouring hotel - not sure what the state of play is on that. We love Southern Palms - hope you have a great holiday.

hello, I returned from the Southern Palms hotel on the 1st september 2008 and there was no construction at the hotel it was beautiful!!

if you like fish food you must try oistines its a big open space bout 15-20 mins from hotel where they have dancing and a wide range of fish you can try, I had the blue marlin and it was gorgeous, but as someone has previously said where ever you go there will be fish on the menu, and you are 5 mins walking distance from restaurants on the gap, there is a steak grill oppposite the hotel which is really nice and friendly, we only ate at the hotel twice in 2 weeks because it was nicer to venture out down the Gap!! also a chinese opposite the hotel that also does take outs is very nice called Jade Garden, and the hotel does not mind food being brought back to the hotel which was great!

Hope this gives you more of an idea of the hotels situation.

It is an amazing place and me 7 my family are returning back next year to the same hotel.

WOW......Thank you all so much for all the information, we are really looking forward to going on the 25th September.....I emailed the resort about the renovations and had a reply from Britta she told me that renovations started at the beginning of September, They was replacing the roof of the Lady Smith building, which is almost done, replacing tiles, painting and general refurbish of rooms in the Banyan building.....all of which is almost complete. Which makes me feel better.....my husband and I are celebrating our 41st Wedding anniversary while we are there, we are early 60's and have just retired and have looked at this hotel for nearly 10-years in the travel brochures and said one day we will go there, can't really believe we are booked and going there at last, we are going to hire a car for a couple of days so we see all of the island, if anyone can tell of things that are a must to see I would appreciate it.....once again thanks to all of you.

Don't know how long you will be there for but car hire (jeep better than a moke as safer and with protection from sun and/or rain!) for a few days is well worth it. Since it is your first time to Barbados, try the East Coast (Bathsheba), North Point and the Animal Flower Cave, the Fish Fry at Oistins (Fri and Sat most lively), a catamaran trip (we like Cool Runnings but there are other good operators too). Depends what you enjoy - there are plenty of gardens to visit, wild life sanctuarys, rum factory, sugar mills etc. There's a myriad of restaurants and nowhere is too far in Barbados. If you put some of these ideas into the search box at the top of this page it will bring up previous posts on these - or click on eg restaurants etc on left hand side. Southern Palms is lovely so you'll have a good time!

Thank you "Almatt" I see you are from Sheffield, I am originally from Doncaster, Yorkshire. I have lived in Canada for 30-years. We are only going for a week and so looking forward to going to Barbados, I see a lot of British people go there, I didn't know that. I really miss British Magazines and Midget gems....oh well we can't have everything.....I have noted all the places you have told me.....Regards S.
