snorkel sites

any recommendation on the best sites to see the most variety of fish with somewhat easy access. Can anyone tell me how hard it is to access the following sites. I hear people mentioning to be careful of sea urchins and fire coral on entry how bad is it?

Toris reef, Something Special, Windsock, Red Beryl, Cliff and Bari reef.

For almost all sites in Bonaire you will want some kind of foot protection such as booties that fit inside open heel fins. Some people wear water sandals such as Tevas into the water and then change into their full foot fins and clip the sandals to a waist strap. Most sites require that you walk over coral rubble on the shoreline and then across ironshore at water's edge, both of which are tough on the feet. There are indeed sea urchins and fire coral but you would want to avoid those even with foot protection.

Of the sites you mentioned, Windsock and Bari would be the only ones I would consider entering without foot protection. Both are easy entries and not prone to wave action. Tori's requires making your way down some rocks and then out the channel of the salt intake which is a rocky bottom. Not hard to do. Something Special is sandy after you get across the coral rubble at the shore. Red Beryl has ironshore that can be easily navigated if you watch your footing as there are ridges and holes in the ironshore. Cliff requires walking across coral rubble and rocks on shore and then making your way through a cut in the reef which is at the shoreline.

You might want to consider purchasing Bonaire Shore Diving Made Easy by Susan Porter at www.bsdme.info. It is written for both snorkelers and divers and contains very detailed information on each site, including entry/exit. It also rates sites for snorkelers so you have an idea what to expect.

If you feel they give you stability and protection, will stay on your feet in the water until you switch and have a way to keep them with you throughout your snorkel than they will probably work. You also should be comfortable switching into your fins from your crocs in the water.
