Anyone rented a truck from Avis...?

So I booked a trip using a ::shudder:: travel agent, which I NEVER do, and now I remember why. It's a Dive & Drive deal which includes truck rental, evidently through Avis. I know that most people talk about Telerin as being easy peasy but I was wondering if anyone could give me info on their experience renting from Avis,

Specifically, I am wondering how much of a deposit they are going to want to hold on a credit card - the actual rental cost is prepaid. Also, are their trucks mostly brand new & shiny? I was really hoping to get something a little beat up so as not to worry about scratches etc.

I cringe thinking about how long the process at the airport may take. Next time, book your own trip, genius!!! Arg. Anyhow thanks in advance for anyone who may be able to give me some info!

Hi Barbie,

We've frequently rented from Avis, they never put a deposit on our credit card. Trucks vary from nice to a little dinged up.

You're right to think about the car rental line at the airport, since almost everyone on your flight will be renting a car (although from the various car rental agencies) and there is always a line. We suggest that as soon as you get off the plane, send the person in your group who is renting the car over to the rental car counter (outside of baggage claim across the parking lot) and the rest of you get your luggage. There are free wheeled luggage carts so this makes it easy for one person to get all the luggage. Then just walk outside and wait for your driver to pick you up, or just walk over to the rental car counter.

Hope you enjoy Bonaire!

All the best,

Kate

We didn't rent through Avis but I have to say the process at the Bonaire airport for us was the most surprising of anywhere we had been. Basically we landed and there was two lines, one for dutch passports and one for others. There was no forms or questions. Easy peasy! and then we grabbed our luggage which took less than five minutes. Then headed out of the airport where someone was standing with our name on a paper and they took us to the rental car place with another group of guys. Took about ten minutes to complete the form and get the car. Then the shuttle driver told us to follow him and he basically directed us to where we were staying. It was awesome! It may be easier than you expect.

Avis is just fine. The best reason to use Avis is that they take Amex and don't require cdw. Call Amex, add the one time coverage for foreign pick up truck coverage. It costs 25.00. I'm not kidding, it exists. Amex becomes primary with no deductible. They will require a 2500 hold on your Amex, but it never actually gets charged. No one else I've found allow cdw waiver And takes Amex. No other card offers the same pick up coverage that I know of.

PS: Bonaire airport and car rental is a breeze. It helps that it's tiny.

Ok, so here's another question for all of you Bonaire travel gurus - I have read that Avis does not *require* CDW but I assume that it's in my best interest to take it. Anyone have a ballpark idea of how much we're talking about for a pickup for one week...? I don't carry an AMEX.

Thanks for all the helpful info!!!

For the on-airport rental car agencies.... When you exit the terminal building after getting your luggage (or before, if using the tactic described above) just look ahead and slight to your left. You should see a building with a line of small rental car offices. It is probably about 150 - 200 feet from where you come out of the terminal building. It is the only building out there way, so easy to find/identify.

Avis requires a partial damage waiver or a loss damage waiver to rent in Bonaire. How do those differ from from a CDW?

PDW is pretty much the same as CDW. For $9/day this covers collision or other partial damage to the vehicle, less a $500 deductible. At $14/day LDW offers incremental coverage that also covers loss of the vehicle (i.e. theft.)
