Where to visit in Cuba? Help!

My husband and I ( in our early 50s)vare hoping to visit Cuba in Feb, 2014 for a week. Which part of Cuba should we visit? We want to visit Havana for a day or two then stay at an all inclusive beach resort. We originally thought Varadero but not keen on it being so busy. We enjoy swimming, snorkeling, walking, not interested in sitting in a bar. What are people's thoughts about Holoquin or Santa Clara? We are travelling from Regina,Sask. and only have a week so we do not want to spend lots of time on lay overs, in buses... Thanks so much for your advice!

Hi there:

If you only have a week and you want to spend a couple of days in Havana, then Varadero or Jibacoa would be the obvious choices.

Holguin, in particular, is too far away and involves an hour's ride to Holguin Airport then the flight to Havana which can vary depending on, whether or not, it flies via Cayo Coco.

Go to Jibacoa - There are only two resorts there - Breezes Jibacoa or the more rustic Cameleon Villas. Great snorkeling off the beach and close to Havana.

Definitely Breezes Jibacoa (4 star) or Cameleon Villas Jibacoa (3 star). Snorkeling is excellent, especially in front of the Cameleon. The sea does not always cooperate though and you can have several days of not so great conditions, but when it's good, the snorkeling is great.

Its a very good place for walking as well, one of my favorite activities next to snorkeling.

It's also only 64 kilometres away from Havana, so ideally situated for visiting the capital.

Thanks, I will check out Jibacoa but is it too isolated? Would you recommend flying to Havana and taking a taxi to Jibacoa? What are your thoughts about Santa Clara? Too far away?

You could just as easily fly into Varadero for Jibacoa. Cayo Santa Maria, where the resorts are for Santa Clara, is 386 kilometres from Havana.
