Havana Nightclubs - Traditional Dance

Hi everyone,

I have a question for some of our more experienced Havana travellers. Are there quite a few nightclubs and/or discos in Havana that are specifically geared to traditional Cuban dance?

Already thinking ahead to 2012 when we'll stay on Playa Ancon, tour Trinidad of course, and on to Pinar del Rio and Havana for a couple of days and at least one over-night stay in the capital. My wife would like to try some traditional salsa, cha cha cha, and merengue while there. Of course I don't know how to do those steps at all, but my wife has been wanting me to take ballroom dance lessons with her for quite some time now. If I'm going to make the investment (or "mistake"? Help! lol), I'd definitely like to try my new moves out dancing amongst the best. I'm sure my swagger would be good for a few belly laughs at the very least. My wife has no worries though ~ she looks good even standing still. ;-)

What you will find in the clubs where they play latin music is mostly salsa and cumbia. Not a lot of merengue, batchata nor chacha in the clubs I have visited in Cuba. But you will have a lot of fun dancing salsa there, and you will see some amazing dancers.

It's easy to find the traditional stuff in Havana, Gengen. It's all there in many different venues.

I guess we have a different vision of what "traditional" is in Cuba. My ex pointed out many times to me (when I was asking about going to dance merengue and batchata) that those were not cuban dances, they are from Republica Dominicana. And I'm not saying that you cannot dance those in Cuba, but it's not what is mostly danced. What is mostly danced is cumbia, salsa (the cuban version, from basic to casino) and reggeaton.

And I'm not saying that you cannot find in anywhere in Havana, but the clubs I've been to did not play it. It's like in Montréal, you can find places where they will play bachata and merengue, but it's not what is played in most places...

Sorry, I wasn't calling them traditional Cuban dances - they're just plain traditional dances - and like I said they can all be easily found in Havana.

Thanks Martian24 ~ Gengen,

It's my wife's birthday on Monday...I think I'll surprise her with the dance lessons. Need to do some research now on a good dance studio for us west of Toronto. Gengen, I'm glad you mentioned cumbia and reggeaton too. I'll ask our instructor to touch on these two styles as well. :-)

CCO, although I'm sure that you would be an amazing reaggeton dancer... Your dance instructor will probably not teach it to you since it's not a latin dance per say, you don't dance in pair, it's just a type of music, like rock for us if you want. But if you can manage to dance like the Cuban dance it, I'm sure you wife will love you even more for it... Look at videos on Youtube and you will understand... ;-)

The dance lessons are a re great gift, I'm sure your wife will be really happy!!!

Okay I found a good studio for latin club dance lessons....salsa, bachata, merengue. 10 week course. $170 per head all in. Not sure if they focus on all 3 dance styles combined during that 10 weeks, or only 1 at a time...waiting on an email reply to confirm.

I only have one beef with all of this...it's going to serious cut into my hockey time! And if the rest of the boys in the dressing room ever find out....I'd have some splain'in to do Lucy! lol

Seriously though Gengen, you're right, she'll absolutely love it and she really deserves it too. It'll be well worth the ribbing I'm going to take from the boys.

CCO, most Canadian men don't realise that for many Canadian women, there is nothing sexier and manlier than a man who can dance salsa (the latin version, not the balroom competions full of bling versions, of course... )No need for a good pick phrase, a big car or lots of money, all men need to attrack women is to be able to make them salsa all night...

So the only reason I see why your wife would not be happy about the dance lessons is that she will have to watch out for all the other women who will want to dance with you!!! ;-)

Enjoy the lessons, and tell the guys that they really don't know what they are missing...

That'll be a nice gift!

Now I can show my bf this thread to persuade him to learn some basic salsa with me! ;)
