Havana on my own ( solo female traveller ) ?

Hi - Im planning my own trip from Varadero - Will take the viazul bus to Havana and will stay at the Mercure Sevilla & will use Jorge's service for a walking city tour...it goes without saying that I will use my general common sense as i normally do at home ...but is it safe to do Havana on my own ?

Havana is arguably the safest big city that receives a lot of tourists anywhere in the Caribbean, Mexico or Central/South America.

With the usual common sense and street smarts you'll have no problems.

Have fun.

Cheers,

Terry

Pick up a Havana Guide from one of the major travel guide publications like Moon, Rough Guide, Lonely Planet, etc. They all cover Havana very well for a first time visitor. It'll be an invaluable resource for your research.

Regarding the guide books, several are available for downloading on Kindle (or other tablet computer). I found it very convenient to use my Kindle, which I could carry with me while I was walking. I had all the information with my on my light little tablet without having to lug around the books.

Using a Kindle is fine when you're on an escorted tour or when you're in tourist areas, but it would be a VERY bad idea anywhere "off the beaten path" in many, many Havana neighbourhoods - and elsewhere on the Island.

Nyc, I agree that Habana is safe and, with common sense, you should not have problems. But don't be surprise if you receive a lot of attention if you walk the streets alone or hang out alone in a restaurant, bar, etc. Many Cuban men (and some tourists... ;-)) will approch you. You have to be REALLY firm when you answer them. If you don't want to have company, say it fast and say it clearly. They will understand a firm no and you should not feel treaten. However, if you're too "soft" or nice, you might be stuck with some new "friends", "guides", "novios" or what ever.

Also, even if you want the company, gard your valuables (includind your hart...) as Cuban men can be really charming. ;-)

Just secure your valuables from pickpockets and snatch and grabs and you should be fine. Don't flash a wad of cash in public when making change. Keep your good jewelry at home. Stay on the beaten path and do not go wondering off with someone you have just met and has charmed you.

Take cabs when going out at night and use your common sense. If your gut tells you something is not right then listen to your gut.

If you link up with other like-minded tourist and do not mind their company then maybe see if they want to hang out and go see the sites or go out clubbing.

I think you will have a great time. I have seen many women in Havana which appear to be traveling solo, it is not an uncommon site at all.

My opinion is that, in general, Havana is as safe if not safer than South Beach in Miami Beach. But be prepared for a lot of good natured attention from men. My daughter had plenty of that, and quite a few marriage proposals, some of which were only half in jest.
