Excellent Guide For Younger Travelers / Nightlife Seekes

My husband and I are back from our second trip to Havana. We used the same Havana guide to help us find the hidden music and nightlife that can be hard to pin down in Cuba.

Send me a message if you want his contact info.

Here is my original post a few years ago:

Hello all,

My husband and I just traveled six weeks with a Cuban guide who was lovely; sophisticated, well dressed, mid-thirties, spoke six or seven languages (including English) and had lived in Scandanavia for some years with his family.

We were interested in nightlife in Havana. If you've been to Havana you know it's nearly impossible to know where the parties and music are without a lot of hassle or having spent a lot time there previously.

Our guide, Rafael, knew were to go and got us in and got us great tables at the best music places (we saw Charango Forever, Los Van Van, jazz, etc.). He ordered our drinks at the bar and took us around to meet other young Cuban artists and got us into private parties with actors and directors.

We were in Cuba six weeks. He drove us around the island (not an easy feat, no real road signs, bad roads, etc.). He's a great driver, not crazy, we felt incredibly safe. Best of all, he never got on our nerves or was high-pressure sales. He seemed to understand that we paid him for his services and he didn't try to make money off us with commissions to homes and private restaurants.

As far as price, he gave us a real deal, very reasonable.

If you want his private email and phone in Havana send me a PM.

Have fun!

Will you be posting a trip report on your second trip to Havana? Definitely sounds like you enjoyed it as much as your first.

He didn't ask for money upfront, we just tipped him when we left. We're typically generous tippers...You'd have to make arrangements directly with him, I suppose. He emailed me his website to contact him directly:

Hi there,

I would love to get Rafael's contact info, please and thank you.

Me and my girlfriend are planning to be there for a short time and we'd like to check out the best spots during our limited time there. What would you recommend for single, young females who love to dance but don't to deal with sketchiness? Classy with great music and authentic culture..

Thank you kindly!

Hi Rachel,

You'll definitely be dealing with a lot of attention in Cuba and it can be overwhelming. I liked having a guide for this reason alone, as sort of a bodyguard. Our guide did us better, he brought us to places that were not so 'gringo tenango' as they say in Guatemala. We met a lot of low key locals who do NOT spend their days looking for foreigners to fleece, but are great dancers, etc. We were invited to interesting parties, and went out a lot. It's hard to get a handle on where the good music is on any given night. Our guide knew what was going on and we left it to him.

Rafael's site is here, just click on the mail and it will go directly to him.
