Cuba or Dominican Republic?

Hi thinking about going to one of these destinations next year both look really nice but cant decide i have put topic under Varadero as i had to choose an area,we like a nice beech and they do look nice, somewhere close to local bars and entetainment but not too expensive as we will be AI just wondering how much drinks are-beer,cocktails and spirits, somewhere to visit like markets,Havana looks interesting and would like to go maybe on an organised trip, how much would i expect to pay for this.We enjoy socialising at night and i expect that most of the hotels put on entertainment and have friendly bars.I have noticed after looking on the forums that most visitors seem to be from Ca anda and the UK maybe its the freezing winters that send us to warmer climates.Any info would be great thanks.

Hi Julie,

I have been to Punta Cana twice and Mixico 5 times.

If you enjoy going off property.....then I think Cuba would be a better choice for you.

I have not been to Cuba yet....going in a couple of months. My friend who is a travel agent has been there....well. .....dozens of times. She tells me that it is very safe and that if I am a beach fan and want to travel to Havana...Veradero would be for me, for its proximity.

I think Mexico is much the same, in that I could venture off to local villages, and go into "town" so to speak etc....at least....go off property.

In Punta Cana...the hotels do not recommend this....especially at night.

There are tours there to go on during the day....but at night....it just isn't there yet.

The beach in Punta Cana is amazing, but so apparently is Veradero.

Hope I have not put more questions in your mind lol

Have a great trip no matter which you choose

Iberostar Tainos in Varadero has the best stretch of beach on the peninsula, the water is crysal clear and much warmer that in the Dom Rep.We paid £1350pp for 3 weeks July/August this year.Small hotel(272 rooms)food very good and varied, plenty of drinks to choose from including champagne, the staff are very attentive and the animation team work all day and night to keep you on your toes and smiling.Just read the reviews.

The Catamaran trip to Cayo Blanco is very good, stopping off on a coral reef to do a spot of snorkeling then on to the island.Picture postcard stuff, free bar onboard and on the island plus you get a lunch.

Havana is a must as you are only 2 hours away, really old cars, buildingsand very vibrant.

We never ventured out to Varadero at night as the heat of the day just knocked us sideways and by 10pm I personally had had enough to eat and drink and was shattered so toddled off to bed.Up early to get the most out of the day and never tired of walking down to that awesome beach.

Hope this helps.

Ian.

trip-together summed it up very well:

"If you enjoy going off property.....then I think Cuba would be a better choice for you. "

An AI beach resort is an AI beach resort. In the DR I've heard that the food and accommodations are a bit better;,in Cuba the beaches are better. But if you want to get out and get a real feel for the country you are visiting, Cuba is the place. Based on your original post I would say that Varadero is your destination. Definitely do at least a day trip to Havana. That and a catamaran trip to Cayo Blanca, plus a night or two in Varadero and you have a great vacation at a good price. That was my first experience in Cuba in a nutshell, and I keep going back. Hopefully you'll be hooked like the rest of us. lol

being a travel agent and have travelled bpth places myself here is what I have to say

DR : food is better, beach is good in Punta-Cana but not crystal clear white sandy beach in Puerto-plata. I would not really venture off the property by myself at least not in the clubs at night. Punta-Cana there is nothing to do there.. the big city is Higuey and is not that safe and not that close... You can get better hotel quality at least for food.

Cuba : people are amazingly friendly in general, safer. food sucks even in a 4*+ it can lack variety and no fresh veggies or fruits just mainly canned stuff. easy to visit on your own if you are in Varadero. good deals can be found. i booked myself for 580$ at the palma real for november 8 from montreal!!!

Personally I like to try different places, each destinations has it's pros and cos.

Cuna is generally cooler temprature wise in january than DR i sometimes have customer complaining that it's not as hot as they expected when they travel during that month.

I would agree with everything you say except for this: "no fresh veggies or fruits just mainly canned stuff"

In my experience there has been "some" fresh veggies and a fair selection of fruit. Seems to be mostly locally grown and seasonal, but what has been there has generally been very good.

Been to both. Loved Dominican. Grand Oasis Marien in Puerto Plata was fantastic. We are trying Cuba again on Nov.1 after our first visit which was terrible. Been to Mexico(loved it) been to Dominican(loved it) Hoping this time that it wasn't just the resort in Cuba. Any questions please send.
