Temps in mid December?

Just wondering if anyone has been to the Varadero area in mid December. We booked not knowing the average seasonal temp is lowest in dec-Jan, and the other couple we are traveling with is quite concerned it will be too cold for a sun seekers vacation. The other couple wants to pay a penalty and rebook in Mexico. Is this worth the extra$ and headache over 2-3C degrees?

It will be great with temps not much different if at all than Mexico. Good to have a sweater for the evening sometimes. Have a great trip. We have been there in Dec. and are going again and come back the middle of Dec.

Mexico definitely has warmer temperatures, But nothing beats Cuba and it's charm... I say stick with Cuba and as mentioned above bring appropriate clothing for potentially cooler evenings...

We are going to Varadero Paradisus Dec 3 - 10. I was concerned with the weather too but read hotel reviews dating back to December 2010. All said the weather was nice and warm.

We just hope the pools are warm enough to swim in.

It will be hot....or cold.... Or somewhere in between. To be assured of good beach weather, spend a bit more and go further south.

From personal experience, Dec 3-10, 2010, Varadero temps went from warm to cool to cold. Too cold and windy to stay at beach.

Yes, it was warmer than home, but too cold to enjoy.

The pool will be cold. The weather may be "so, so" but still, it will be Cuba :)

Pack a few long sleave shirts, that's all it takes.

Average temps in Mid Dec are 26/17 C. About the same as Puerto Vallarta. Warmer than Cabo or Mazatlan.

Cold fronts can go through Varadero a few times a year. Last Dec 15th the temp went down to 4C. Cancun was 9C last December.

Huatulco is the place to go in December. Temps are 30/21 C. You won't find nicer weather than Huatulco.

Can anybody out there think of anyplace in the Northern Hemisphere that is not the coldest in Dec or Jan?

Just a thought-- have you considered other areas of Cuba? Holguin tends to be a few degrees warmer than Varadero.. That way you can up your temps by 2-3 degrees and still go to Cuba...

The Santiago area of Cuba is generally a safe bet to be warm. As mentioned above, Mexico can be cool as well......Cancun and the Mayan Riviera are often cold when northern Cuba is......so if you decide to do Mexico instead, I second the idea of Huatulco. I was at Jibacoa for the cold snap last December. It didn't keep me out of the ocean. ;-)

For the weather in Varadero you can go to:

http://www.accuweather.com/world-forecast-15day.asp?partner=accuweather&myadc=0&traveler=0&zipcode=CAC|CU|CU011|VARADERO|&metric=1

to get a 15 day forecast, or:

theweathernetwork.com/fourteenday/cuxx0018…

or:

weather.com/outlook/…

To get a 10 day forecast, or a second or third opinion (LOL),

But remember that 'scattered thunderstorms' means just that, you may not see one all day, you may have a ten-minute one, you may have a heavy one for a while.

For averages and statistics, try one of these:

weather.com/outlook/…

or here:

wunderground.com/history/…calendar

or here:

www.weatherbase.com/weather/weather.php3…

and you should be able to get the weather for anywhere in Cuba from the above sites.

Here is a website with general info on Cuba, (thanks to Mardi) which also has averages for all months:

Hi Derek:

My husband and I have travelled to Cuba every December just before Christmas for the last 6 years. Last year was the coldest by far but amazingly the pools were ok to swim in. Only experienced really cold pool in Jibacoa. Pool temps varied dependent on pool depth. Always bring a jacket/sweater/long pants for night esp. if eating at a "beach restaurant" for dinner as it is cooler on the water at night. Cuba Junkie makes a good suggestion - warmest weather we had during December vacay was in Guadalavaca seems to be consistently a few degrees warmer than Varadero. Have a great trip
