My wife and I just returned from Varadero and were not asked for proof, but it's best to carry evidence, just in case.

Pretty much a non issue unless you are from the US.

Cheap insurance is available at the airports should you be asked to produce your coverage and don't have any govt or other plan.

Highly unlikely that you will be asked for proof, but you should always carry the necessary documents in your hand luggage.

Never been asked since the rule came into play several years ago and we go down at least once if not twice a year. We always have it on us just in case though.

Our travel agent warned us that we could be refused entry into Cuba is our insurance carrier was related to a US company. Has anyone else been told this?

It's true that US insurance does not work in Cuba. BUT...

You cannot be refused entry if you don't have insurance, but they will force you to buy their insurance.

However, for a Canadian, this is a non issu since our provincial health care card is recognized by the Cuban autorities as to be a valid insurance proof.

Your travel agent should inform himself/herself before advising custumers...
