Private (non-government) Taxis

Last year I heard that private taxis were not able to travel outside of Varadero (cross the bridge).

We are heading back to Varadero on Monday, March 4 and plan on visiting Cuban friends who live outside of Varadero (Camarioca, Cardenas and Santa Marta). Last year we hired a private taxi to take us to their homes. Just wondering if we have to go back to hiring 'government' taxis or are the private taxis still available and able to get out of Varadero.

Thanks.

Denise

Good to hear you are booked!

I travelled to and from Varadero in private taxis and local cars without any problems at the bridge checkpoint last week.

If the driver had "issues" he would let you know before you get in.

Thanks...! As was discussed last year, it was probably an 'at this particular moment this is the rule' kinda thing.

And oh yeah - we never pay until we arrive...!

even if a private taxi needs to stop, it will not be an issue.. we select and negotiate a private taxi and it has never presented as a problem into Cardenas and back. What I look to do is to find a private liscensed taxi driver that is from Cardenas as it becomes more of a win win...

From what I understood, there is a limit on the number of people in a private taxi going across the bridge. When it was two of us headed to Santa Marta, no problem. When there were four headed to a ball game and later to Playa Giron, the same driver asked us to walk across and meet him at the bottom of the steps. Our driver, who is licensed, explained that it was a government attempt to encourage groups of tourists to use government taxis and tours instead of private ones. He had no issues taking us straight back to the hotel though. Not sure how accurate that is, but that's what we heard earlier this month. Happy Cuba travels!

Just the two of us that would be utilizing a private taxi....Santa Marta to get inked, Camarioca and Cardenas to visit friends in their homes...

Sax - never thought of looking for a driver from Cardenas - that WOULD make the trip more interesting.

3 more sleeps...Suitcases dug out of the shed (had to wallow through thigh-high snow...!) Now just to finish laundry and pack...!
