Don't get too carried away with the gifts.

Check out the...

Do a search on the forum, you will find a lot of recent posts on gifting, on top of the article that Deebob pointed you to.

Bottom line, there is no need anymore to bring anything. Tip in cash is the best since now, the stores have all the items you will bring (except for the "Canada" stuff) and they can buy everything (or almost) with cash.

Do in Cuba as you would do in Canada, which is tip in the country's currency (CUC) when you get good service.

Dollar store items and other gifts will be resold on the Black Market. Donate them to a charity at home. Tip in Cuc's for good service.

Good advice given in the above posts. Leave your gifts at home. Tip for good servoce. Tip in CUC, that way they can buy what they need, NOT what you/we think they need.

Cheers

I'm genuinely curious about bringing items branded with "Canada" or "UK" or whatever other country. Are they truly appreciated, or will they also simply be resold on the black market, with the other trinkets?

I had read something that was around the time of the London Olympics, and any clothing with a Union Jack was a hot item in Havana. Fashion is probably more interesting than trinkets.

Items with the Union Flag on them are still highly prized.

They have been in high demand since the Olympics.

To answer your question Pokoedm, we have never had anything taken and the one year I had an extra suitcase which was untouched. Always a controversial topic but I think there are justifiable responses to both sides of taking gifts.
