Beware fellow travellers : make sure you add up your orders and don't be afraid to challenge the cashier if her calculator comes up with a different price !!
Last year, one of the duty free shops at the Varadero aiport had the cash register window 'covered' up so that you cannot see what prices were being scanned. The cashier then manually entered the price again into a calculator and tried to short change me. After some discussions, I finally got the correct change once the cashier realized that I was aware of what was going on.
Visited Cuba again this year. Just got back from Varadero last week. This time, the cashier in a different duty free shop (I avoided the one I visited last year - and yes, the cash register window is still being blocked by a piece of carton) tried to shortchange me again.
They always try to add a few CUCs for themselves.
Imagine how many tourist got ripped off at Varadero airport. It's sickening to see tourist being ripped off left , right and center. Needless to say, I just don’t have much good impression about Cuban people after travelling independently for two weeks. Every one is trying to rip you off. They all seems to think that tourist are walking wallet and are stupid. There are honest means of making a few bucks, this certainly isn’t one of them. I’m not one to stand for that and like to be vocal about it. Cuban gov't better do something about it.
