Family Holiday, Cycling & Small hotels?

Starting to think of our next "far away" hotel (ie outside of Europe), will probabky not be for a while but looking for some ideas and info. Would love to visit Havanna for a few days followed by a week or 10 days on a beach. Varadero seems to be the main beach resort, or are there other ones?

I am not a huge fan of All Inclusive resorts, but prefer indepently run/family owned (boutique) hotels, preferably on he beach. When I searched online, all the hotels that came up are the large chain hotels. Is there any small hotels in Varadero?

We would be 2 adults travelling and a child in early teens. Is there plenty to see and do if we dont want to be on the beach all day long, every day? Does anyone have info or experience about renting bikes and go on a cycling holiday in Cuba? Lke if it is safe, cost, when would be a good time of the year to go, etc. ?

To the best of my knowledge, one cannot rent bikes other than for a couple of hour trip off resort. Your best solution is to take bikes with you, but coming from Ireland with at least 3 bikes could be cost prohibitive.

Casa Particulars ( B and B's) usually cost 20-30 dollars per night, per room but provide an opportunity to experience Cuban life off resorts.

As for the best time to go, it is very hot now in Cuba and only gets worse from June-October. Keep in mind, October, Nov. and Dec are hurricane season as well.

There are a few places that offer cycling holidays (including bike rental) in Cuba. Check out:

Rosa Jordan is a Canadian who has a great deal of experience cycling in Cuba, and has written a guide book “Cycling Cuba”.

Gee … I don’t think that is over-the-top expensive. Not that everything can be compared to prices in Canada, but a one-day bike rental in Montreal, Toronto or Halifax averages about $35. - $40. per day (plus taxes).

There was a cycle tour that just finished recently recently from the UK … here is the link:

They may have more info for the OP.

Thank you both for the info! Will check out the links.

Re resort, would you recommend Varadero or somewhere else?
