Private Villa Rental (& Transportation Problem/Question)

A group of 8-11 of us are going to rent a private villa for 8 nights towards the end of this year (NYE 2014--nothing like early planning) and many of these resorts are in the Jan Theil area of the island. Clearly we would either have to rent a car(s) or be calling taxis to come pick us up, as I'm sure there are none driving by these private/quieter neighborhoods.

Would getting by on just taxis be sufficient or cost effective, or would we be better of renting a car (or two)? We will be going to Willamstad, the usual beach areas (mambo, zanzibar, etc), but would also like to explore the island a bit (and would rent a car for that day or two). Any advice would be welcomed!

Thanks.

A car is $38 a day including insurance from D&D - and you are not at the mercy of a taxi. I would rent a car.

Jan Thiel area (not so central).. For sure rent a car. A taxi ride from the airport will cost you a lot. Taxis are not so cheap on Curacao compared to some other countries. Rent 2 cars for the whole period.

Rental Car highly recommended. Jan Thiel is a very nice area but not centrally located as said above. While Mambo and Zanzibar are nice areas(very popular touristic beaches with facilities) but they are by far not the best beaches on the island. For that you have to drive to the western part of the island. Taxis will cost you a fortune in this case

Curacao is a easy island to navigate.

A nav system is $5/day from D&D and may be worth it.

It took us about 4 days to get comfortable with just a map on our first visit.

Now it's easier than getting around Boston.

By the time we could spell out some of the street names to see where you were, we would be 7 streets away.

Hi,

I have a home in Jan thiel and would suggest a car. better then getting cabs all the time. just rent two cars, so if someone would like to leave early they can. In jan thiel you will not be needing a car. We have 7 restaurants, 2 beaches, diving school, supermarket, stores, ice cream store, casino, bars etc etc all arround the corner. You can walk there. Also easy when you go out for drinks at night, no need to take the car. Happy hours are hot in Jan thiel Zanzobar, zest and Papagayo! still a long wait but have great fun, sure you will have a great time!
