The Strand vs. Royal Sea Aquarium Resort

We are traveling with our to children (ages 4 and 1) in December and have the option between two, one bedroom condos at each of the resorts mentioned above. We are looking for good beaches and proximity to restaurants, attractions and a grocery store.

We understand we'll likely need to rent a car. We'll obviously be driving to explore the island and other beaches. But, would nonetheless rather limit longer trips in the car just to run to the store and get milk (as an example).

Would love and appreciate your advice on which area will provide us with the best and most convenient opportunity for great meals, sightseeing, etc

I have no knowledge on the Strand but we have stayed many times at the Royal SeaAquarium and love it there. There are 3 pools (1 kiddie). Several walk to restaurants and one on site for B,L,D. There is a shuttle to the large supermarket daily and also a shuttle to Punda a few days per week. Very roomy, full kitchen, large balcony. Of course, sea aquarium is right next door. If your room faces the aquarium, you can watch the dolphins all day on your balcony. Free passes if you stay there. Beach is okay (man made) but nice. Great place for a family with kids. You would only need to rent a car for a few days to explore the rest of beautiful Curacao!

I hope others have stayed at The Strand. Just saw photos today and am seriously considering it. Just my husband and I traveling and the Royal Sea Aquarium seemed more family oriented. Would love to have more from folks who know. Thanks!

The strand looks like a nice place and was only $90 a night. Free wifi it seems. It is very far from the water, though. Can't hear or even smell the ocean I imagine. Now, put it down on the beach and I am all over it!

Perhaps if I wanted to stay a night or two in Willemstad, but I imagine it would be pretty tiresome long term to get in a car for just about everything.

At least at the Sea Aquarium, you can spend the afternoons at 'home' at the beach, just steps away from your room.

And if you want to take a nap hubby can go down to the beach rather than drive somewhere.

As I am catching my breath, I am seriously hoping that we are thinking of different properties. The one I am looking at is significantly more than $90 and appears to be oceanfront. We are hoping to offset the higher cost by having a full kitchen, no casino calling as we come and go, and maybe working a few hours of overtime. It is past Willemstaad on the map, so aware of extra driving to hit the fantastic snorkeling beaches to the West. The ad says "walking distance to Pieteermaai" and it looks to be halfway between the Marriott and the Sea Aquarium, which will allow us to go both directions.

I just checked the Strand, end of October, like $325 a night. They are apartments and it is oceanfront.

Yes - you are correct - I was looking at the Quints thread and typed in here by mistake.

Personally I would recommend Jan Thiel area. There are many places there you can stay. Everything is in walking distance like supermarket, beach and even some nature walking. There are 4 beaches in that area on further away then the other. Also most places you can stay also have restaurants. The beach is also children friendly. It even has a pool with the view at the sea Of course the beaches are not as pretty as the ones at "Westpunt". Check which hotel offers free access to the beach. Entrance fee is not that high do, but you will need to pay for chairs also. The other free beaches like caracasbaai you do not need to pay anything but are less accommodated.

But of course "The Strand" is a good location also with nice view. It is right next to Avila, but I also believe it is very expensive. It's closer to town to do some shopping or visit restaurants and Rifford Village. It all depends what you like and your wallet

I would recommend Jan Thiel, but that is just me.
