How interesting is the Carib village?

We'll have a whole day on our Caribbean cruise, and are looking at the various excursions. The Carib village looks interesting, but is this what worth our one day in Dominica? It doesn't look like they combine this with a waterfall or Emerald Pool trip, perhaps because the Carib village is far from the cruise dock?

The Carib village is interesting, but, if I had only one day for Dominica, it would not be my first choice. It is, as you guessed far from any of the cruise docks - on the east side of the island. Can you obtain additional details from your cruise line as to what else is included in this excursion?

I would consider the waterfalls or rain forest or snorkeling. What are your interests?

Well, I was curious to see what they say are the last surviving Caribs. But I like seeing pretty, natural areas as well (unique falls, flora, or fauna). This is the cruise ship's description:

Experience the unique features of Dominica's culture, nature and views from a different perspective. Enjoy a easy hike to a waterfall, an organic buffet of local food and fruits, entertainment by Carib Indians and time to swim in the natural pool of the Pagua River. On your way back, you'll have a photo stop on Horse Back Ridge and make a stop at the Botanical Gardens. Please note that depending on ones physical abilities, the activity level may range from moderate to strenuous.

My wife, being a culture vulture just loved it though she did have some reservations about over commercialism creeping in. Some plans(I believe)to connect the site with a theme relating to 'Pirates of the Caribbean' which was filmed nearby.

As for me I just preferred to see more of the natural beauty of the island which I found unbelievably spectacular.

Try to get a local driver to take you around would be my suggestion if you only have one day.

Hiring a driver was definitely something I was thinking about. Do you know of any I can contact by e-mail prior to ship's arrival? I would rather leave a deposit and arrange something in advance if possible (I've done that before on prior cruises). Or is it very easy to do with plenty of drivers available even for a large cruise ship? One time I waited until arrival, and there were too few drivers for all of the passengers wishing to use their services...

Can't exactly answer your questions as our trip was prebooked on boat and part of a contractual arrangement.

However I do recall there being plenty of other drivers touting for trade and other posters have also indicated this.

Check out www.visit-dominca.com and you will see a list of tour operators including Antours and Peppers tours who have had some good recommendations. Costs seem to have been $100-$140 so maybe you could team up with someone else to cut costs.

Check back on previous postings too as many others have been in similar situation.

Hope that helps.
