7 to 10 days in Dominica

Trying to plan a 7 to 10 day day trip to the island with my wife. We are avid hikers and enjoy staying active. Dominica looks like just the island for us! (Note : We've been to the Hawaiian Islands a few times. Is this comparable to Kauai as far as development, hiking, etc...?)

I'm looking for suggestions on lodging and an itinerary. I'd have to say we would probably want to do some exploring almost every day and maybe have one or two beach/pool days. Is there a good central location to stay at or should we plan on moving to different locations throughout our trip?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The island looks awesome!!!

Hi Jason,

Great idea! Yes in terms of sights comparable to smaller Hawaiian islands, in terms of infrastructure (roads, path quality etc.) far more rough.

To do all hiking I'd pick one northern base (Calibishie-Portsmouth) and one southern (Roseau valley or further south). This way you're never further than 90 mins by road from your planned hike.

All the best,

Any thoughts on a specific book to get? Can we do most of these things without a guide? Is that advisable? We're pretty adventurous :)

Thanks for the info!!

We organised all using the LP but admittedly we only had 4 days and its section on each individual island is limited. Maybe other books spend more pages.

The only trek where you MUST get a guide for is boiling lake, otherwise you could get lost after dark or make a wrong step falling through the thin soil and get 3rd degree burns. Other treks could be done alone as long as you gather decent detailed maps locally, our guide for the 4 days (famous for also being assistant organiser of the local Pirates of Caribbean shooting) had such maps.

All the best,

There is a very comprehensive guide book written by Paul Crask-it should be available at most large book stores and is definately available on Amazon.com. It covers in detail all of the hikes to be made on Dominica and much more.

Please post what you come up with. We are thinking about the same type and length of trip. I trust you've read about the canyoning excursions. They look amazing!

We're also planning a similar trip, so we're curious to see what you come up with. A little more diving/snorkeling for us.

The best beaches are in the north east so a few nights in Calibishie would be sensible.

The most beautiful waterfalls are in the south east, which is also the least developed area and a very natural part of the island.

There are many hikes (including the all day hike to the boiling lake) from the interior areas near Trafalgar and Laudat.

Best snorkeling and diving in the south west but you could stay in Roseau or just south of Roseau. Best to read about the individual hotels here on tripadvisor to select those that suit you. Be aware that some hotels have addresses that indicate they are in Roseau when in fact they are nowhere near Roseau. (Tripadvisor uses mailing address as the location but most hotels have a PO Box in Roseau - hence the inaccuracy)

Forgot to add that if you stay in one location you will end up spending a lot of time in the car. That applies to wherever you stay. Some people prefer to do that if they find a hotel they really like but the driving is tiring and distances are deceptive due to winding roads.
