Yes, we really enjoyed it up there but didn't find anywhere particularly nice to stay right in that area. However, close by we stayed at Calabishie Lodges and Red Rock Haven and really loved both. The food at the latter is FANTASTIC!

The north coast and especially the Calibishie area is beautiful and not very touristed.

We stayed near the village of Calibishie at Sea Cliff Cottages and it was wonderful.

Portsmouth is only about a 20 minute drive from Calibishie where you can find a bank with ATM machine and shops for supplies.

Calibishie has two small grocery stores for the basics.

You will not find any large hotels or resorts in this area as in the rest of Dominica-so self catering is the way to go.

A rental jeep is a good idea for getting around it will give you more freedom of movement-altho there is public transport.

There is a lot to see and do in this area as far as nature goes.

Have a good time-if you like nature you will love Dominica!!!!!!!

Thanks for replies, - Julian - glad you enjoyed Cheltenham . We have lived there for over 20 years and it certainly is a nice town. The Cotswolds are even better.

Back to Dominica! We are arriving by cruise liner and we have about 8 hrs. ashore. Can you get to Portsmouth by taxi? how far is it? any rough idea of price. Thanks.

Calibishie is nowhere near Portsmouth. It is a long winding drive.

Portsmouth is fun and very safe. There is very little to buy in the shops but the locals will keep you amused. saturday is market day and should no be missed. be there before 8am for the best atmophere.

Excursions that really make the trip worthwhile are

Cold Soufriere: The drive up there and the views to The Saints and Guadeloupe make up for the drab visitors area.

Cabrits: Most accessible and lovely hikes around ruins of old British Army base.

Indian River: If you must.

Day trip to The Saints: Islands off Dominica that are actually French. very different.

Toucari: Little fishing village a few miles North of Portsmouth with great beach (best at low tide) and great snorkelling.

The best food in Dominica per EC Dollar can be found at 'Sea View restaurant' off Bay Street in the center. $13 EC ($5 US) will fill you up with great amounts of Chicken and fish Creole style. Daytime only.

I love Portsmouth.
