Quality Snorkeling in Dominica, St. Tobago & Grand Turk?

We are on a cruise with day stops at Dominica, Tobago, St. Lucia Grand Turk and the Dominican Republic-Cayo Levantado.

We are used to the snorkeling around St. John, Belize and Roatan and grand Cayman. Global warming and hurricane has killed a lot of coral in the Carribean but of the above ports where we have day stops if you are avid snorkelers like which Islands is it worth taking a snorkel trip.?? If you have been there in the past 3 years and remember the organizations you went with if it catered to small groups of 6-10 people and made maybe 2 stops at really good areas on reefs please share the names with me.

Thanks..

In Dominica, there is good snorkeling. One of the really cool places is Champagne bay where you can see the Geothermal gases being released. The underwater life is amazing there. I would highly recommend Al dive http://www.aldive.com/. They are amazing and will customize to whatever you would like to do. They are not a large dive shop. Enjoy! We really want to go back again.

Is it the champagne bubbles that make it unique or is it the also the variety of coral, fish species and sea anenomies that make it a truly worthwhile snorkeling experience>

I snorkeled there a few years ago. I personally felt it was more about the champagne bubbles than the sea life but that may have just been the day I was there. Having said that, I think seeing the geothermal activity, feeling the temperature changes over the bubbles, and the underwater terrain was worth going in itself. It isn't something you get to see on every snorkeling trip.

In that area, there is not a lot of life as the sulfur content is really high and the heat, so not a lot of life can withstand that type of environment. It is really unique because it is so rare to find a place like this so accessible.

However, in the general area around there is a lot of fish, life, coral, etc. There are several places in the area that were around 20-30 ft of water that had a great amount of color, sponges, coral, and fish.

Thanks for the information. I would like to know of the name of the quality spots other than Champagne. I may charter a small power boat and captain for 3 hours to take us to 2 or 3 spots.

We snorkeled at Scott's Head and it was so nice but I don't know if you can find the time to get there. It's at the end of the Island, not close to anything but does have a restaurant. We went for a week and it wasn't enough time. We rented a vehicle and drove all around literally; over 300 miles. We try to stay away from crowds so we hiked to waterfalls. The champagne bubble place was so full of people from a cruise ship we past it up. My cousin and her husband run an organization in Belize. BFREE, they are here in the states now but they still go back and forth. If you live around the area you should look it up. Have fun; Dominica was all I hoped for and more.

Thanks. The folks that are taking us out are going to have us sprnd one (1) hour snorkeling at Scott's Head and one other spot. In addition since Itold them I was not keen on Champange they said they would add a third 20 minute stop for us just to see what it is like. therefore I think in 3 hours we will have the best that Dominica has to offer.
