somewhere between seedy and AI

We are hoping for a decent but reasonable place to do lots of snorkelling, especially off shore. I don't like AI's very much but I get rattled when I'm harrassed constantly to buy, buy ,buy when I'm away from the AI's. Any suggestions??

i like las terrenas. been there twice and never had anyone accost me while on the beach. playa las ballenas is my favorite, and has a wide range of places to stay. kari beach club being least expensive to the hotel alisei being most. also look at playa colibri which is farthest from town and most peaceful, yet not too far to be able to walk to town. also the colibri and alisei have kitchens so you can cook some of the fresh seafood sold on the beach between you and town. happy travels, ben (also like to add that if in US there is no flight to the nearest airport and you would have to fly into santo domingo, which may make this a more difficult place to get to but certainly worth it!)

Look into Bayahibe on the south coast (15 minutes from La Romana airport, 90 from Santo Domingo and Punta Cana airports). It's THE place in the Dominican Republic for diving and snorkeling. Saona island and Catalina island are close by and visited by all the dive shops here (off shore snorkel tours too).

Hotels in Bayahibe village:

Dreams La Romana (all Incl)

Hotels in Dominicus: 5 minutes drive from Bayahibe.

Viva Wyndham Bavaro

Viva Wyndham Palace

Iberostar Hacienda

Catalonia Gran Dominicus

Be Live Canoa (previously called Oasis Gran Canao)

Check out the Bayahibe and La Romana forums on Trip Advisor

btw Gran Bahia Principe La Romana is much further away and not great for snorkeling.

btw the beach sellers are pretty mellow in Bayahibe and won't harass you once you've said no.
