Considering DR

The wife and I like our winter sun, we have traveled, mainly to Africa to get it but we are now considering DR.

I could trawl the forum but prefer to ask a couple of questions and hope you kind people will help

We are not mad on All inclusive is it possible to have a reasonable holiday on a budget and not go AI

We like to meet the locals, talk to the fishermen and land workers etc but we have very little Spanish.

We like to be close to a town for restaurants and bars etc but not discos, we are 60+

Given all that can anyone recommend a resort or a town where we may enjoy some or all of that.

Las Terrenas has many smaller hotels within a short walk to town. Bayahibe and Caberete may also suit your wants. Happy travels, Ben

The Samana Peninsular - Las Terranas would be a good choice. The problem would be getting there. Most charters from the UK are to Punta Cana (AI world) and are almost as expensive as schedule flights these days. You could fly with Iberia via Madrid) and land in Santo Domingo for a short stay in the Zonal Colonail (the most pleasant part of the city) and then head up to Samana with Caribe Tour buses - worth reading the LP or Rough Guide for more information.
