Where to stay?

Planning a trip with 6 adults and 1 child. We want to go diving, snorkel from the beach we are staying at if possible. We didn't want to rent a car for the entire trip maybe just a few days of exploring. Prefer to stay away from all inclusive resorts and large facilities. We've looked at places from Punta Cana to Juan Dolio.

Suggestions?

If you want to avoid AIs one area to consider is the Samana Peninsular: Las Terranas, Playa Bonita or Las Galeras. Various small hotels and self catering options. IMO the most beautiful part of the country.

Tough to get there from Oregon, only U.S. flights are from JFK. I agree it is the best part of the country. To go from Oregon you may get flights into SDQ and get a van transfer from there.

Or try Puerto Plata Sosua./Cabarete.

Bayahibe or dominicus areas. Non ai in both areas. Bayahibe is the more active town of the 2.

IMO and the opinion of Diver Magazine, the best diving is to be had off Las Galeras, Samana Peninsular. Tibisi 1 and 2 (also great snorkelling, Barco Hundido ( a really nice modernish wreck with lots of fish) and The Tower. Also plenty of options for non AI in the area for example, La Isleta, Chalet Tropical, Todo Blanco, La Belle L'Aventura to name but a few.
