Don't want AI - still worth going?

We thinking about to travel to DR for 3 weeks in November, but we hesitate a little bit because everything seems to be gathered towards AI - which we absolutely don't have an interest for. We like beautiful beaches but it seems like they mostly is surrounded by big resorts and doesn't have a lot to offer for people on a budget.

DR looks beautiful but if someone could give us an oppinion, we will be very grateful!

Samana Peninsula! Especially Las Galeras, only 1 AI just outside the village but pretty special guest houses and villas to rent for example, Villa La Caleta, Chalet Tropicalis, Hotel Mariposa, Juan y Lolo to name just a few. Plenty of budget priced places too Hotel Marina, around 500 peso per room per night, La Isleta, Todo Blanco, La Plantacion.

Beaches, check out Playita, Fronton, Rincon, Madama, plenty of hiking / walking, still unspoiled but we do have a good eclectic mix of 'European' and Domincan restaurants, and there is enough to see and do to occupy you for 3 weeks.

Flights into El Catey or Santo Domingo airport means a shortish journey into the heart of the village

There is more to the DR than just the AI resorts. Have been a regular visitor and lived in the DR over 25 years and only spent 1 week in an AI - and that was sufficient - LOL.

In addition to Las Galeras there is also Playa Bonita near Las Terranas - nice quiet beach,

In the SW you could travel down to Barahona and Barucco for Casa Bonita. and then on to Perdenales - Bahia de Las Aguilas - best beach in the country and not a hotel in site. Stay in Perdenales - some good cheap options In addition there is Santo Domingo with historic attractions in the Zona Colonial. For further details get a good guide eg Lonely planet or Rough Guide which will have more info on these and other attractions and areas.
