Currency for Shopping in Puerto Plata

Just wondering if we are going on a shopping tour in Puerto Plata & Sosua, will US$ be accepted or will we have to exchange our money for pesos ?

Not only will you get a better deal using pesos but if using dollars any change coming back will usually be in pesos.

Thanks for the info. How much money in pesos should I consider bringing with us for shopping. I know this might be hard to answer since we are never sure what we will be purchasing however what would be a reasonable amount ?

Will I get a good exchange rate at the hotel for pesos?

Get your Dominican pesos in the Dominican Republic.

Some hotels have a bank run cambio on site that give decent rates. Generally speaking, changing money at a hotel is a terrible idea.

Find a good cambio, Western Union, or just use the ATM.

Don't change at the airport, not good rates. I see that you're going to the GOM. You can exchange your money at the Playa Dorada Plaza, which is very close to the GOM.

Actually you will find the rate at the bank in the ariport is pretty good and much better then what you will get in your hotel. But use the bank (just to the left of where you exit customs) not the guys walking around changing money.

The Banreservas cambio outside the terminal is not bad. There is also an ATM right there too.

The Globo cambio inside by the luggage used to be terrible but seems better now.

Playa Dorada is okay. They were listing 34 for US$ when I was getting 35.2 in Puerto Plata and Sosua. They will do 35 if you negotiate. They list 24 for CDN$ which is ridiculous but will do 26 but still not good.
