I have been travelling to Cuba, DR and Mexico for 10+ years now and have seen mosqiutos and have never taken malaria pills.

I think you would be safe without them.

Stella785, this is a question that should be directed to a travel health specialist who can advise you -- based on your own particular health situation -- whether you should take malaria or other medication before or during your trip. Just because someone else may not have had a problem during repeated trips to a destination does not mean you yourself may not be at risk. You can find a variety of Toronto travel medicine clinics in the Yellow Pages; the one I've been going to for years is downtown at Bay & Gerrard. There is a consultation fee for each visit but it's worth it for the sound professional advice you'll receive on how to protect your health, as well as the peace of mind you'll have knowing all the facts before you go.

thanks for the tip!

I'm well aware that this is something I should discuss with a medical expert (as I already have made an appointmennt), I just wanted to see peoples reviews on the subject.

Ok there has not been a reported case of Malaria here on the north coast (PP/Sousa/Cabarete/Cabrera) in many years.

Currently the CDC in Atlanta does NOT reccomend any meds for malaria in this area. We have traveled here for 5 years and lived here for 3 and have never taken the meds nor has anyone we know taken them.

Hi Stella,

When we phoned our Dr. for Dukoral for hubby, she insisted we take malaria meds. When I told her we don't go off resort, and we've never seen any mosquitos where we stay, her reply was "you have to take them anyway". I wasn't planning on taking them this time around, but we did anyway.

hey Stella, thought I'd share since we're both going to the Mambo at about the same time, I checked with my Dr today who advised that Malaria meds were not required if you're going to PP. However, as others have said, it's personal preference. I'm going with the Twinrix vaccinations only.

Myself I would rather only pump chemicals in to my body when I need them and not pump them in when I don't!

Malaria in the north coast is practically unheard of. The British government do not recommend anti-malarial medication for the north coast. From here... http://www.cabarete.org/AboutDRSafety.html there is a link to the government Health Protection Agency and also a link to download a PDF of the HPA's Malaria guidelines, which gives very good information about malaria.

I have (and will) happily take anti-malarial meds when visiting medium to high risk areas (such as a recent trip to Vietnam) but not take them to negligible risk areas like the north coast of DR. East coast, I'd be inclined to take in to account things like the weather & time of year.

And returning to my original comment regarding the chemicals, be aware of the side effects of the meds, they *can* be quite severe. Fine if you need them, not fine (in my opinion) when you don't.
