While not wild or crazy, I saw 2 very unusual things while vacationing in Jamaica one year.

Our resort was located close to the cruise ship dock and there was a ship that had caught fire while out to sea and came to Jamaica to offload passengers. From our resort, we could see the black charred balconies which looked like they were melted down the side of ship. It must have been a very frightening experience for the passengers on that ship. I'll definitely pay better attention during muster drill after seeing that.

During the same vacation, a man at our resort was pulled from the ocean after nearly drowning. The efforts to revive him attracted a huge crowd on the beach. There were so many rumors that week about how it happened in the first place (heart condition, hung over, riptide, etc) and how much time he spent in the Jamaican hospital (a couple of hours, a couple of days, he was airlifted back to USA,etc). So I don't really know what happened.

Those were very sobering moments for us.

I don't know if this is wild or crazy but a number of years ago (before all the current security issues) we were at a Mexican airport waiting for our return flight to Canada following a vacation with our two young children. A commotion broke out just about 100 feet away from us and within about 30-45 seconds there is a very heavily armed unit of what we believed to be the army on the scene. It turns out that two of our fellow Canadians, one English-speaking, the other French-speaking, who had apparently had some ongoing difficulties with each other at the resort they had been at, had just gotten into another argument. Someone had said something to the other or about the other while they were in line and that set off the incident. Of course we're sure that alcohol was somehow involved.

We were amazed at how quickly the soldiers had things under control but it was certainly very scary with our two children there. We just aren't used to seeing people carrying machine guns and body armour.

We found out from other passengers that these two were traveling on the same plane as us. This was quite upsetting to know. Apparently a number of other people also did not want to get on a plane with these two (having been at the same resort as them and putting up with them all week) and complained. They were both refused boarding by the airline employees which of course upset them. Both were apparently escorted from the airport and they each had to find another flight home (I'm sure at their own expense).

Morale of the story? Don't worry about the locals so much as your fellow travelers. The very recent case of a 19-year old Canadian being killed by two other Canadians in DR is a prime example. The recent case of a husband trying to murder his wife and attempting to make it look like a robbery gone bad is another.
