where to get the best price on cigars

Planning on buying some cigars when we are down there. Just wondering where the best place to buy them would be. We are staying at the GV in the Playa Dorada complex. As well wanting to know what a good price in US dollars would be for a box of 25 mid-range cigars.

Quite a few shops in the Plaza/Mall, though they are tourist prices. But if you ask a taxi driver he will take you to shop off the complex and wait for you. Taxis are cheap and you can agree a price before you go.

The drivers are often stood together so you can ask them all at once and see who gives you the cheapest.

I had Cuban and RD cigars and I actually preferred the DR cigars.

It depends what kind of cigars you like. We once shopped around for Torpedos and cubanelles and we found the best price to be at the airport.(the box of Torpedos was about $200.00 US) If you go into PP (the city) you can go where they are being made. You have to be careful with your cigar purchase as sometimes they are not fresh due to the way that they have been stored.

The cheapest prices (and the biggest promises) are available on the beach (product is usually crap).

For a fair price for an excellent product (no cheapy, cheapy here) see Tim Hall at Cafe Cito.

we went to centro leon. it was the best deal going. its in santiago. we went on a rainy day so we didn't loose a day at the beach. $100 us for cab fair/escort for the day for four of use. once we entered the cibao valley, the rain cleared and we had a beautiful day. best prices, direct from a humidor(very fresh), nice coffee shop and galleria on the premises. santiago has several million people living there with big shopping malls and rich in history. beats pacing around the lobby in the rain and as far as a travelling experience, you're well of the beaten path

We bought cigars while on our Jeep Safari tour at the market on the "coffee plantation". Better prices than the plaza on most things. I bought a box of 10 Cubans for $16US and some of the DR cigars were a bit less. I highly recommend this tour, gives you insight into how the "other half" lives.

Someone sets up a booth of cigars at the GV 1 or 2 nights/week, but they are very pricy. If you are going to bring rum home, we found a little store about 1-1/2 km from the resort. Turn right & look for the "Satin Dolls Massage" sign. There's a small store there that sells rum for 1/2 the price as the plaza, only 140 Domincan pesos! We didn't do the rum tour, so don't know what the prices are like if you buy from the factory.

Hey Playamon, do you recall the name of the cigar shop? We are going on Feb 5/06 to the Bahia resort. Our college boys are avid cigar smokers. They prfer Romeo/Julietta or Cristo $$$$$$ Can you suggest a lesser priced brand? I agreee with buying cigars on the beach or with the hotel vendors. Buyer beware!! Unless you have some knowlege about cigars, stay away from these people.

Hello Lesley2004 I cannot remember the name of the cigar shop...but it is in the middle of town All the people know it..just ask any taxi-cab driver. Don't know of any lower priced ones, of the brands you mentioned...but if there are any...they will have them. I went to this place to buy my big cuban cigars(Cohiba's).If your after cubans...the guy their will explain everything to you about how to tell the difference between the fakes..and the real thing(as well as any other brands you are interestd in...not just Cubans). One tip i can tell you is that when you walk into this shop you will see a lot of wooden carvings/statues...then you know it's the right place.

Cheers.
