When leaving Puerto Plata airport you go through security checks like any other airport, zero tolerance of liquids in carry on luggage, then you will have US Customs on arrival at home.

"The following things are forbidden in hand luggage:

1. Liquid soap

2. Contact lenses liquid

3. liquid gel deodorant

4. hair spray

5. hair grease

6. All kinds of creams and lotions

7. lipsticks

8. Make up remover, liquid o pase/cream

9. All kinds of foams

10. Removers and cleaners of paints and metals

11. All kinds of colognes and perfumes

12. Shampoo and hair conditioners

13. Shaving creams and gels

14. All kinds of toothpaste

15. All kinds of knives

16. Any type of sharp object, scissors and nail clippers

17. Guns, or replicas of guns

18. Bottle openers

19. Fireworks, cigarrete lighters, and matches

20. Sports equipment such as golf cubs, Hockey sticks, ski equipment, squash and tennis raquets, and ice skates.

In case a passanger has the urgent need of carrying liquids, gels or aerosols, he must declare it on the inspection checkpoint and its contents will be verified. These items must be separated and packed in a transparent and resealable plastic bag (with max.capacity of three (03) ounces, or 90ml) inside yours hand luggage; and each container shall not exceed the allowed capacity.

Diabetic passangers with prescrption bringing liquids or gels can not exceed five (5) ounces or 148 ml each container.

Medicines can be transported without medical prescription, but these must be verified on the security checkpoint.

Baby Milks, creams and lotions will only be allowed to those passagners travelling with babies, and its contents cannot exceed four (4) ounces or 120 ml per container.

In case you purchase any of the items listed 1 to 14 listed above at the Duty Free shops, they will have to be handed in a plastic bag upon the moment of purchase, with the sale bill ticket attached to the bag, and indicating the following: name, flight number, and passenger destination, and he will be warned that he is not to remove, for any reason, this ticket before boarding the aircraft.

In case the bag doesnt have the ticket when boarding, this would have to be searched again.

Note: All other non authorised items will be confiscated.

In case you choose to hand them to a family member, or put it in the luggage to check, he will be allowed to do so."

I'll add one more thing to Angie's list: straightening irons. I got mine, a tiny 1/4 inch by 6 inch, confiscated last year coming out of POP.

Also, if you carry medicines with you, you better carry them in their original container. I had problems only once and they let me keep them because they were in their original CVS container with my name on the label.

You can't have a lipstick or gloss or even some 30ml purse spray perfume in your hand luggage?

A couple of things:

Also do not carry on small folding umbrellas. The folks here seem to like them and will confiscate them from you as well as all teh things Angie mentionsed.

Seondly to answer your original question you will clear US customs when you land in the US not here as is done in some islands.

Have a great trip
