Playa Dorada, Grand Paradise or Barcelo?

I am a solo traveller and would like to visit PP later this year. I have no interest in the beach, mainly interested in cultural and historic sights as well as adventure activies (ie, zip linning, dune buggies, etc). Which of these resorts would be a better choice, both are very similar in price. Mainly interested in location (they both appear to be next to each other on the map), clean/comfortable room, food and drink at the resorts. I've read the TA reviews and there are both rated very highly and very poorly by recent travellers. Any other resorts that I have priced are too expensive once the single supplement is added.

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

tosouthamerica I have not stayed at either but I think most would prefer the Grand Paradise. Hopefully someone who has stayed there will help.

I would suggest a day trip to Santiago for some culture as well a day exploring Puerto Plata. Lots of other activities around. You can check our some of these sites:

I would recommend the Barcelo due to its bigger, a little more activity on the resort. better food, swim up bar, better entertainment and if you happen to have a rainny day, you have way more shelter with activity. Love puerta plata, the people and all it has to offer.

I stayed at the Barcelo twice this year and would not hesitate to stay there again.

Thank you for the replies.

What about the Blue Bay Villas, I have repriced package prices and it looks like the Villas are within my budget too. The Villas appear to me more upscale than the other two properties. Not sure about the location thought. The main drawback I can think of is that as I am a solo traveller I may not have many people to interact with if the other guests are mainly couples. Pros for the Villas if that the food and beverage appear to be better, there are no children at the resort. I don't care for the beach so not bothered that it isn't directly at the beach, don't care for nightlife either.

What is the location of the Villas like?

Overall, is this a good choice?

I stayed at Blue Bay last year, it was ok but if the price is comparable I would definitely choose the Barcelo. The pool at the Barcelo is much better and I preferred the food there too....rooms were probably about the same. There is a disco on site at the Barcelo which many people like. I just much preferred the Barcelo I guess, although the staff at Blue Bay were great.
