First Time to Dominican Republic

My husband and I are travelling to Puerto Plata on Sept 15, for 7 days. We'll be staying at the Grand Paradise Playa Dorada and it is our first time visiting the Dominican Republic. We upgraded to an ocean view room, which part of the resort was renovated? Feeling anxious about the mixed reviews . Looking for suggestions on the excursions? Must see places? Is Punta Cana available as a day trip?

No Punta Cana is not a day trip. If you look at a map of the Island you'll see it is very far away.

One of the good ideas for an excursion is to get a taxi for a 1/2 day or whole day trip into Puerto Plata going to the Cable Car to Mount Angelina, Haitian Market, Ambar Factory, Brugal Factory, Malecon, Shopping and so on. Another must do is a day trip to Sosua beach and also Cabarete Beach.

I will add Monkey Jungle to the list as well.

Take a walk over to the plaza and stop in to se James for booking excursions.

We had an ocean view at Grand Paridise - ground floor can't remember the building number - we were in the 1st building to the right of the buffet if you are facing the ocean, and these rooms had been renovated, our son and his wife were in the building facing the bay ans those rooms had not been done yet, but that was a couple of years ago now.

We have been going to Playa Dorada area for the last 10 years and we have been arranging a taxi with Felix who is one of the guys you will see there in front of the hotel with the blue shirts identifying his as being qualified to escort people - he also speaks fairly good English. If we don't see him we ask and the guys and they are usually pretty good about getting hold of him for us. They seem to work the circuit of area hotels so are not at a location every day. He is dependable and very accommodating, they have a nice air conditioned van and will take you wherever you want to go. Unlike taxi's in North America you don't just get dropped off at your destination they actually wait for you to be ready to move on. Prices are also much more reasonable (and will negotiate) than the official tours but they can take you to many of the same places. Last year we had him take us on a half day tour of the countryside, cabe car and to the downtown area. Other guides are probably just as good but we have come to rely on him when we are there.

There are cabs waiting outside customs and the rates are posted. Very simple and safe.
