You could walk into La Romana town, but the heat, especially at midday, makes it quite unpleasant. Not that much to see really within walking distance. There's a big Jumbo supermarket just over the bridge. Good for rum, cigars, coffee. Their fruit and veg section is exotic.

There's a cigar factory in La Romana town, but you'll need a taxi to see that.

There are a few small squares in town where you can people watch - ask a taxi driver to give you a tour.

You could go to Altos de Chavon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altos_de_Chavón and http://www.casadecampo.com.do/altos-de-chavon not typical Dominican but with spectacular views over the river Chavon. Less than 10 minutes taxi ride from the port.

We are cruising next month on Carnival and stopping in La Romana. Don't really want to go the beach, so we are thinking of Altos de Chavon. What is the price of a taxi or is there a bus system that is safe and on a time schedule. Has anyone gone here not on a ship tour?
