Cruise stop in La Romana Dominican Republic

Would like to know what what beaches to visit. Do have 2 young children so walking for miles is not an option. Is it safe to taxi there or do we need to do a shore tour through the cruise line?

You can take a taxi, it is safe. You have a choice of Bayahibe public beach or Dominicus beach. Both are nice, Dominicus beach has a more touristy feeling, in Bayahibe you might go to the village and see a bit of local life as well.

The taxi ride is about 15 minutes to Bayahibe 20 to Dominicus.

At the port there is a new booth selling day passes to the private beach of Playa Minitas inside Casa de Campo. It's a package that includes transport and lunch, sorry I have no info on prices yet.

Casa de Campo is not your typical Dominican village! Villa owners include Shakira and Michael Jackson (before his untimely demise). Playa Minitas caters to "upmarket clientelle" with corresponding prices and amenities. Although it's a very nice beach, with calm water and white sand, it lacks any Dominican flavor, you could be in Miami.

Head to Bayahibe if you want a natural beach and to sample everyday Dominican life. Head to Playa Minitas/Casa de Campo for luxury!

Many excursion companies have "cruise ship special" trips to Saona, check ProExcursions or Seavis.

If you just want to chill, come to Bayahibe and snorkel from the beach or just relax. If you want to do a little, then try Stan Up Paddle boarding with SUP Bayahibe. Walk around the village and see a bit of the local life, try the food - many restaurants to choose from, most of them with a nice view.

We took a Carnival cruise with a stop at this port in September 2012. There is a booth a very short walk from the pier. This was not advertised on the ship but they took our sail and sign card and charged it to our ship account!! it is a round trip to the resort Casa de Campo. There are towels and very nice chairs and umbrellas that are included. It was roughly about $90 for us (2 adults,2 children). It included the round trip, chairs, umbrellas and towels. The beach is very nice and clean. It was not the best location for snorkeling but if you are simply wanting to relax, it is perfect and much cheaper than anything you can book onboard. They have a food service there that you can purchase once on the beach. We loved it and would go back again. One of the parts that we liked about it was it was at your leisure so we stayed all day. Most excursions last max 4 hours (including travel) so this was awesome for us to spend the whole time at the beach.

Just to clarify, the Casa de Campo beach is not in the village. As YB1 said, it is a luxury part of La Romana, to experience a bit of the local life you have to go to Bayahibe. If you look at this map

discoverbayahibe.com/your-dominican-holiday-…

the port is on the east side of La Romana, Casa de Campo is just beside, Bayahibe is a 15 minute ride further east.
