About Manati Park&Dolphin Island- DON'T GO!

I know there have been many threads on this subject, but I felt compelled to say something about it since learning of what's going on here. I was looking under "Things to Do" when I came across Manati Park and Dolphin Island. It seems many, many people do not know what these operators inflict on the dolphins. I was shocked when I read the reviews posted by people who know about the conditions the dolphins are kept under.

They are held in small tanks and have to endure up to 200 people a day touching them and riding on them. In addition to that, they put on performances all day. They are very stressed and overworked. They work from 10 AM to 5 PM everyday!

Looking into this subject further, I found a video on Youtube of a poster who video taped his kids dolphin swim. It was so sad. The dolphins worked and worked while the trainer BARKED orders at them. The trainers did not show any love or affection for the animals.

In addition, there have been reports (and at least one review) about the dolphins attacking people. This is due to the constant stress they are under. They do not normally attack people, unless they are made to live in these conditions!

Please, if you have any consideration for the well- being of these beautiful, intelligent creatures DO NOT VISIT THESE PARKS!

Th investigation has gone much further and they are questining the "park" for more deaths this year, of this beautiful animals...

WOW .. Monica thank you so much for the article really interesting.. uhm even more evidence not to support Manati Park

since the article is in Spanish and I figure it would be interesing information for non spanish speaking travelers.. here is a rough translation, hope it makes sense or is somewhat legible.

FOUND SUPPORT FOR THE MINITRY OF ENVIROMENTAL AFFAIRS IN THE CASE OF MANATI PARK

(the rejection of this practice by the government has its foundations/bases of the marc/commemoration

of the Cartagena convention/summit and the protocol of SPAW)

the academy of sciences and the Dominican foundation for marines studies (FUNDEMAR)

backed the decision of the Ministry of environment affairs to subpoena Manati park to appear in front of the justice system due to violations of environmental norms/laws, both national and international, which regulates the handling and commerce of dolphins.

Recently Manati Park introduced to the country, four bottle nose dolphins from the island

Cuba, without having any authorization/permit from the Ministry of environmental affairs.

"That permit for the importation of dolphins was not granted due to reasons that Manati Park keeps their dolphin in very poor conditions" said Idelisa Bonnelly-Calventi, president of

Fundemar.

She pointed out that last year, the Ministry of environmental affairs denied Manati park the permit

to import dolphins into the country." due to reasons of the occurance deaths and violations to the procedures of information, as well as violations for using incorrect documents" Bonelly stated.

In 2002, the company Manati Park, carried out the Illegal capture and forced captivity of various dolphins in/from? waters of the National Park of the East.

Various organizations started legal/judicial proceedings, but "the Office of the judge advocate general of environmental affairs closed/put away(at the bottom of the draw) the files

without offering any explanation" according to the different organizations.

Well.. I wonder who Manati Park is paying off to be able to still be conducting business even after these organization have subpoena them and after all the evidence that is mounting against them...

cheers,

This abuse of these wonderful creatures is worldwide and even where they are kept in good conditions they are still be held in captivity and very unnatural surroundings.

Until people stop paying to go into all these parks many more will die.

I'm not sure about Manati but I know japan supplies a lot of the worlds "show" dolphins from their annual dolphin hunt. Marine parks get to pick which dolphins they want before the rest get slaughtered.

Warning: very graphic video

the best Dolphin facility I have ever seen is Ocean World outside of Puerto Plata, the animals are in a large 10 hectare enclosed salt water bay the is filtered and maintain as close to a natural habitat as can be done. The owners operate a facility in the Bahama's as well as forida also.

They do not use Japanese dolphins but Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. They have in the past year recorded live dolphin births at the facility.

Whether anyone agrees or disagrees with captivity of these mammals, that is their perogative. I just tell what I see and go!

I alwyas say "if doplhins are so keen on us humans touching them ang giving us nose push ups then they would be lots in the sea in front of resorts all over the world'.

If it is does not come up to you when it is in the wild it is probbably choosing not to.

DO NOT pay money to swim with dolphins. It is so selfish to want to do this at the cost of the freedom and happyness of an itelligent animal!

There are some people out there who so strongly want to believe that something other people do is wrong that they will ignore the facts and even make stuff up, lie if you will. It is well intentioned but pure fantasy none the less. I have seen enough from organizations such as PETA to be very skeptical of such claims. I have never been there but have not seen any photographs or video suggesting any validity to their claims, may be they are right but I'm not convinced of it. You have to make your own decisions of what is right and what is wrong. I personally attended a swim with the dolphins program in Jamaica last year and it is an incredible experience. I found the dolphins seemed to not only be cared for but really cared about by the employees, they were openly protective of them. I will go so far as to state that any claims of wild dolphins not actively socialising with people in their own way is at best pure fantasy, I have personally witnessed dolphins swimming around and with boats of spectators and heard the accounts of people that have been saved by them or swam with them in the wild. I also believe that any desire to spend time with these amazing creatures as being somehow selfish is selfish as well. It is so presumptious to believe that your opinion is the only opinion that is right and everyone else therefor must be wrong.

That said I'm going to mount the proverbial dead horse and say again "Why is Punta Cana, off the resorts, so expenisive?" It is less expensive to swim with the dolphins in Jamaica, why is that?
