Here are the features we are looking for

Nice rooms - really important

Walking distance to store but not a priority

So far, we have narrowed the resorts to the following ones -

Barcelo Bavaro Palace

Barcelo Punta Cana

Dreams Punta Cana

Excellence Punta Cana

Gran Bahia Principe

Grand Oasis Punta Cana

Grand Palladium Bavaro

Grand Palladium Palace

Grand Palladium Punta Cana

Grand Paradise Bavaro Beach Resort

IBEROSTAR PUNTA CANA

Majestic Colonial

Occidental Grand Punta Cana

Paradisus Punta cana

Riu palace

Look list really need your help.

Thanks much well in advance

Hi

You have a lot of resorts on your list, in fact too many so you really need to narrow it down a bit are add more things onto your wish list.

As far as Excellence is concerned the answers are:

Nice rooms - really important = Yes

Good food = Yes

really nice beach - calm not too rough - beach is great but the ocean can often be red/black flagged

More than one pool - don't like crowed pool = Yes

Walking distance to store but not a priority = No

Friendly staffs = Yes

It also has the added advantage of being adult only if this is important to you.

Have you taken a look at the Bahia Principe Ambar, the adults-only resort within the Bahia Principe property? They have the shopping complex in the front of the resort. I've stayed at the Bahia Principe and I though the food was pretty good.

I'm going back January 09 to the Ambar (my 6th trip to PC) and I'm looking forward to it.

The Riu Palace Punta Cana is a lovely property but they only have one pool. Big enough and easy to navigate. Paradisus Palma Real the same thing. Beautiful property and they have that new shopping complex (can't remember the name) right outside the resort entrance. Palma Real is next to the Melia Caribe Tropical - both owned by the Sol Melia corp.

Hope this helps.

I agree with Flipflop Man you need to narrow down your list. I've been to the IB Punta Cana - very nice, and the MC - fantastic. I've just booked our 2nd trip to the MC for next January.

The bottom line is we can help, and everyone have their own opinions of their favorite resort, but you'll have to do your own research be it here on trip advisor or Debbie's Travels has some great info too. Narrow it down to a couple of resorts then go with your gut instinct and book it.

Dreams is a gorgeous resort, but somewhat secluded...not much around. The beach was nice, but the ocean was a little rough for some in our group and I still have scars on my feet to show how sharp the rocks are. Water shoes can easily prevent this (hindsight truly is 20/20).

We selected Edenh for our upcoming trip and opted for the Paradise Club. We were looking for a great beach and there are none better than the Bavaro. With the upgrade we have access to the private pool which is something we are really looking forward to. I believe that the Occidental is within walking distance to shopping in Bavaro, as well as, Steve's.

Of the ones you have listed I have been to Barcelo, Excellence, Bahia, Palladium, Occidental and Riu. Of those our favorite is Excellence with Palladium coming in second. We find the atmosphere at an adult only cannot be beat. There is something to be said for laying on a beach and hearing the sounds of water and nature not screaming kids. Having a quiet, relaxed dinner after a tough day in the sun. Even going to the other resorts when there are not a lot of kids is not the same as going adult only. Since we went to our first adult only we have a hard time booking anything but.

Out of that list I would pick Excellence or the Majestic.

Of course it would be great if you decided on our resort...EdenH, but if not...based on your list and desires, the resort that best suits all of your requirements would be the Paladium complex.

Decent rooms...same as all listed

Decent food....same as all listed

Calm Beach

More than one pool

close walking distances

As for friendly staff...that is a part of dominican culture. Should you be considering Edenh as well, please email me or PM me and I can assist you.

Cheers from the calm waters of Bavaro Beach

Hi again

Still quiet a wide range of resorts offering different things.

Anyway, no surprise to anyone I am sure that I certainly suggest you have a look at Punta Cana's #1 Resort [based on TA's Popularity Index], Excellence which as an added bonus is adult only.

Excellence is a class act and although some say it is expensive they have no problem getting people to go there - in life you get what you pay for and most of us want any holiday or vacation to be something special and trouble free. The one thing that is certain you will be made to feel very special indeed and you will take away many happy memories.

We went there last September and loved it, so much so, that we are going back this September and cannot wait to get back. We have also been to their other two resorts in Mexico and love those as well.

Due to the recent spate of bad reviews [these have now slowed down again] about the food and the staff not speaking English, etc I contact the people I know at the resort and asked them if anything had changed since our last stay and the answer was no. However, as they take each and every review and comment on Tripadvisor and other travel related sites very seriously indeed I have been informed that the management team have had a meeting with the food and beverage department to make sure that such comments do not arise in the future.

The problem with food quality, variety and the way it is cooked is that it can be very subjective and lots of people have different views on what good and bad is. Whilst I would agree that the food at Excellence is not the same as you would get in a top restaurant in the States or here in the UK it was very good in comparison to the other four resorts we have stayed at in Dominican Republic.

The people I contacted have no need to lie as they know I will be turning up there in September and if there has been a downturn in standards I will report this in my live from thread and updated review

If you have a look at Tripadvisor’s own Traveller’s Choice Awards for 2008 you will see that I am not alone in thinking that Excellence is a great place:

tripadvisor.co.uk/pdfs/tca/TravelersChoiceAw…

you will see that Excellence Punta Cana came:

#3 in "The 25 Most Popular Destinations - World"

#1 in "Best Pool in Latin America/Caribbean"

#7 in "Best for Romance - World"

#3 in "Best for Romance - Latin America/Caribbean"

If you have a look at my review and the photographs which are attached you should get a good feel for what it is like.

Their website just in case you have not seen it can be found at:

excellence-resorts.com/all-inclusive-resorts…

Yes, Excellence is a little remote/isolated being about an hour and a bit sometimes bumpy ride from the airport - 10 mins further away than Dreams which is also on your list. Please be aware because Excellence is in the Uvero Alto area of the island that if you want to go on any trips or go shopping it will involve some additional travel – it is the sort of place that people go to and stay on resort so if you are not that sort of person Excellence may not be for you.

The beach at Excellence is great and you can walk for miles in either direction without seeing another resort. However, the ocean can often be rough and as a result is often red/black flagged so if you want a resort where you can swim in the ocean a lot Excellence is not the place for you.

As far as the entertainment is concerned it is not what I would call lively as most people are there to chill out and have a romantic time so if you are looking for a resort with more action again this may not be the place for you.

In addition to the entertainment there is live music every night and they also have a disco and casino on site as well.

Excellence suited us and it may suit you – it is not perfect, no resort is, so have a look at it and see what you think.

we have stayed at the Grand Paradise Baravo - do NOT recommend! it was okay, but the food wasnt that great, nobody understood english... i mean the other guests. we have stayed at Majestic Colonial and loved it. i recommend the colonial jaccuzi suite... nice and romantic /c full size private jaccuzi on private patio. we are going back there next month and have opted to try excellence club. from what we hear, it is wonderful! we will be taking the kids the next trip, and will be returning to majestic colonial with them, so we opted for an adult only vacation this time. the food, room and service was wonderful at majestic colonial, and we are looking forward to excellence..... stay away from grand paradise, like i said it wasn't bad, but not good either. hope this helped... if you have any specific questions that i might answer, i will be happy to help.
